Inter beat Milan in Italian derby This win put Inter into the third place in Seria A. That could be a moment of inspiration for them. Inter hardly reached third place this season and of course not by beating Milan. Having players like Seedorf, Blanc and Vieri they believe they can still be the first place in Italy. Inter were worthy winners of the Milan derby after an impressive second-half performance. The win puts Inter seven points behind leaders Juventus and keeps their championship hopes alive, especially as Juventus still have to travel to the San Siro twice. As for AC Milan, this defeat all but kills off their title challenge. The early exchanges of this fiercely contested derby were mainly in midfield, and there were few goalscoring opportunities. The only near-miss in the first 40 minutes was a header by Paolo Maldini which almost flew into his own goal after 23 minutes. The first good chance for Inter, who were the better team in the opening 45 minutes, came after a fine move involving Clarence Seedorf and Alvaro Recoba after 40 minutes. They set up Ivan Zamorano but he was unable to provide the finish that the move merited. Two minutes before half time, Inter took the lead when Milan's goalkeeper Christian Abbiati miskicked a back-pass. The ball fell to Luigi Di Biagio who freed Recoba, and his cross was tapped in by Ivan Zamorano. Zamorano almost made it 2-0 shortly after half time, but his shot was blocked by Abbiati. After 58 minutes, man-of-the-match Recoba hit the post with a powerfull shot, and three minutes later he forced another fine save from Abbiati. Inter were all over AC Milan and deservedly scored again after 63 minutes when Di Biagio scored his 29th goal in Serie A and his first for Inter. Although Inter had more chances, it was Milan who scored the last goal of the game. In the dying seconds Massimo Ambrosini tumbled over the legs of Dario Simic and referee Trentelange gave a penalty. Andriy Shevchenko made no mistake from the spot, scoring his 17th goal of the season, but it was too little too late for AC Milan.
