It was a surprise result as Milan had gone four games without a victory and the league leaders were unbeaten since September

Juventus started well. In the seventh minute Filippo Inzaghi missed a good chance and 13 minutes later Juve's top scorer missed again after a mistake by Paolo Maldini.

In a rare breakaway Juventus goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar did well to block a Thomas Helveg effort.

Shevchenko opened the scoring just before the interval with his 20th goal of the season.

After the break the game deteriorated and there was a spate of yellow cards.

Seven minutes before full time Milan got the decisive second goal. Once again it was Shevchenko who easily beat van der Sar from the penalty spot.

Juventus remain nine points clear of Lazio at the head of Serie A but AC Milan move up into third. Lazio face local rivals AS Roma on Saturday.

Last season's champions are unlikely to reclaim their crown but tonight's result opens up the race for the title once again.
