Lazio1-0 Valencia

The Spaniards were on the rack throughout almost all of the 90 minutes, and only the brilliance of the international keeper stopped the Italians from bagging six or seven. As the home side laid siege to the Valencia goal, Sergio Conceicao, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Marcelo Salas, Pavel Nedved and Matias Almeyda all went agonizingly close to getting the side from Rome back into the tie before the break.

Yet only a stunning 35-yard effort by Juan Veron seven minutes into the second half proved good enough to beat Canizares. And although Lazio created numerous gilt-edged chances during the final 30 minutes, a combination of desperate defending and brilliant keeping prevented the ball from crossing the goal line.

And Valencia could even have stolen the equaliser on the break through Gerard Lopez - the hat-trick hero for Hector Cuper's side two weeks earlier.

But the midfielder had one goal wrongly disallowed for offside, and he later blasted another effort over with only the keeper to beat.

Valencia's Argentine striker Claudio Lopez, on his way to Lazio at the end of the season, also went close as the visitors held on to secure the famous win.
