Lazio beat Roma in Italian derby

After their excellent performance in the Champions' League on Wednesday, Lazio got their second boost of the week as they took full advantage of the loss by leaders Juventus against AC Milan.

The Roman derby started well for 'visiting' AS Roma when they went one up after only two minutes. It was no surprise that it was Vincenzo Montella who scored the goal, as he turned home a cross by Francesco Totti for his 16th of the season.

Just as in the game against Chelsea, Lazio showed tremendous fighting spirit.

They scored the equaliser after 25 minutes, the ball fired home from close range by Czech international midfielder Pavel Nedved.

And it was just three minutes after their first goal that Lazio got a second when Argentine midfielder Juan Veron curled in a free-kick from 25yards.

In the second half AS Roma created some small openings, but the best chance fell for Lazio as Sergio Conceicao's effort flew past Cristiano Lupatelli but also the post.

The result means that Lazio have reduced the Juventus lead from nine to six points and means they still have a good chance on clinching the title this year.

AS Roma slip from 5th to 6th position in the table and they are 14 points behind leaders Juventus.

They still hope to qualify for next year's Champions' League, because Inter also lost their match this weekend.
