Monaco clinch the French first division
title
Monaco clinched the French
first division title in dramatic style on Saturday when an injury-time equalizer
from substitute striker Dado Prso sealed a 2-2 draw at home with Nancy.
The French league leaders were 2-1 down at halftime before Prso netted a
fine pass by Marco Simone to give Monaco the seventh title of their
history.
With three matches remaining, Monaco cannot be caught at the top with 62
points, 10 ahead of second-placed Olympique Lyon who were held to a
goalless draw by St Etienne on Friday.
Relegation-threatened Nancy scored two goals through Olivier
Rambo and Fabien Lefevre in the ninth and 40th minutes
respectively. Simone pulled a goal back for Monaco in the 12th
minute.
Nancy put up a fight in the second half after substitute
Youssef Moustaid was sent off for his second bookable offence in
the 56th.
But during injury time, Simone set up Prso who just had to
push the ball into the net to secure Monaco their first title
since 1997.
"It was a hard-fought match but I think we deserve this
title," said Monaco general manager Henri Biancheri. "This is
a
personal victory for (coach) Claude Puel.
"We made good choices and we bought the right players last
summer. And we can't be surprised to be crowned champions
tonight."
Monaco took over as champions from Girondins Bordeaux who
took the 1999 title.
The Girondins, who are chasing a Champions League place,
beat lowly Le Havre 3-0 thanks to two penalties by Herve
Alicarte and a last minute goal by defender Nisa Saveljic.
Fourth-placed Bordeaux, beaten by amateurs Calais in the
semifinals of the French Cup in midweek, are two points behind
Lyon and one point behind third-placed Paris St Germain.
Coach Elie Baup paid tribute to the team of the principality
and said: "This is not a surprise. They started the season so
well that they were beyond reach.
"It's a little bit disappointing because they are not going
so well now. And we could have done something. But they deserved
it. And we didn't need a photo finish in this race." |
