Porto 1-1 Bayern

Paulo Sergio seized on a lapse by the Porto defence to score a late goal as Bayern Munich snatched a precious 1-1 draw in a Champions Cup quarter-final, first leg match on Wednesday.

Porto, who had taken the lead in the 47th minute through Mario Jardel, had appeared to be heading for victory in a fast-flowing game. But a quickly taken free kick by Bayern captain Stefan Effenberg found Sergio unmarked in the box after 80 minutes. The striker made no mistake with his shot.

The result was deeply disappointing for Porto, like Bayern former European champions, because they had dominated most of the game and had had the best chances.

Jardel's goal was a sweetly struck header from a centre by Yugoslav winger Ljubimko Drulovic. The same partnership could have made it 2-0 after 77 minutes but Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn pulled off a fine save.

'I am very sorry for my team because they deserved better,' said Porto trainer Fernando Santos. 'We suffered a goal from virtually their only chance of the game.'

Both teams, who have suffered a loss of form in domestic competition, began the game at a furious pace but Porto appeared determined to put their recent problems behind them.

First winger Nuno Capucho hooked the ball narrowly wide in the 27th minute after bustling through between two Bayern central defenders.

Then Bayern's Swedish defender Patrik Andersson had to sweep the ball clear as striker Jardel prepared to pounce after Kahn failed to gather a centre from Drulovic in the 40th minute.

A minute later Kahn was forced to dive to his left to save a fierce shot from Porto's Brazilian left back Jose Esquerdinha. But Bayern also had their chances, particularly in the middle of the first half when they looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Midfielder Jens Jeremies's slightly mishit shot from outside the area bounced wickedly, forcing a flying save from goalkeeper Henrique Hilario after 21 minutes.

After conceding the goal the Germans, who have slipped to second in the Bundesliga after a run of four games without a win, pressed forward in search of the equaliser.

Brazilian striker Giovane Elber, who was later substituted, narrowly failed to get a foot to a curling cross from the right after 66 minutes.

However, Porto appeared to have the game under control, with Drulovic and Jardel always a threat, until they were undone by a momentary lapse of concentration by their defence that let Sergio in for the equaliser.
