Real loose their hopes of winning the championship as they draw with Sociedad.

Real Madrid scraped to a draw against struggling Real Sociedad thanks to an inspired goalkeeping display by Iker Casillas, but the single point is of little use to Vicente Del Bosque's outfit which needs to play catch-up at the top of the table - and fast.

The Real Sociedad players were caught cold in only the fourth minute when Madrid prised open the defence with a superbly-worked free-kick 30 yards from goal, and Savio Bortolini - starting for Madrid 66 days after he suffered an horrific knee injury against Betis - stabbed the ball left-footed past the stranded Alberto Lopez to stun the packed Anoeta stadium.

And the home side hardly got a look-in for the next quarter-of-an-hour as Madrid sprayed the ball around the pitch in style.

But Casillas was finally forced into action when Mikel Aranburu hit the target with a 20-yard drive, before Guti was denied Madrid's second in the 22nd minute by a last-gasp challenge from Sergio Corino.

Sociedad were almost handed the equaliser on a plate on the half-hour mark when Ivan Campo headed his attempted clearance against the foot of Casillas' left-hand post, and Dimitri Khoklov, Loren and Ricardo Sa Pinto all went close as the side from San Sebastian finally got the bit between its teeth.

Raul Gonzalez, Savio and Guti then all had chances for Madrid after the break, but it was Sociedad's substitute Oscar De Paula who found the back of the net to level the scores with a 57th minute glancing header.

And as Javier Clemente's side pushed for the winner against a Madrid team which, by now, had completely lost its nerve, Casillas pulled-off brilliant saves from De Paula, Khoklov (twice) Sa Pinto and Aranzabal, whilst Jankausakas (twice) and Loren were inches away from scoring with efforts from inside the area.
