Real Madrid 2 Dynamo Kiev 2

With Bayern Munich already through to the last eight, the second spot was up for grabs but a game that included three penalties in a 12-minute spell in the first half - only one of which was converted - failed to produce a winner.

Victory for Real would have ensured their place in the last eight, while a two-goal win for Kiev would have put them through.

As it is, they now both have to win their final second phase matches next week to keep alive their hopes of qualifying - with Dynamo Kiev hosting Bayern Munich and Real Madrid travelling to Rosenborg.

'It's a bad result but I think we can still qualify next week,' Real madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas said.

A win at Rosenborg will see the seven-times European Champions through - no matter what Kiev do against Bayern - as Real beat Dynamo in Kiev last November and will finish above them on the head-to head criteria used to decide superiority when teams are level on points.

Real Madrid started well and took the lead after 13 minutes with a penalty from Raul Gonzalez, after Fernando Morientes had been brought down by Alexei Gerasimenko.

Dynamo could have equalised just a minute later when Georgi Demetradze was bundled to the ground by Michel Salgado but the normally flawless Serhiy Rebrov, who has scored 10 goals in the Champions League this season, saw his penalty parried away by Casillas.

Raul then threw away a splendid chance to put Real in a commanding position after 25 minutes when, after being brought down himself in the penalty area, he powered his penalty straight at Dynamo goalkeeper Olexander Shovkovsky and Geremi Ndjitap then sent the rebound wide of the goal.

So three penalties in 12 minutes produced only one goal. Dynamo midfielder Alexander Khatskevich headed an equaliser for the Ukrainians three minutes before the break, connecting with a Rebrov cross without any hinderence from the Real defence.

Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro might have to shoulder the blame for the first Dynamo goal but he was definitely responsible for their second after 55 minutes when he turned a Georgi Demetradze shot into his own net.

However a trademark Roberto Carlos thuderbolt free kick brought the two sides level again after 71 minutes, the Brazilian's shot going under the body of Skovkovsky.

Real then powered forward in search of the winner but Michel Salgado and Ivan Helguera both missed clear chances late in the game which could have given Real Madrid victory and their passge into the quarter-finals.

Howver the evening ended on a downbeat note for Real Madrid when Hierro was booked three minutes into injury time. The Spanish international defender, whose form has dipped alarmingly in recent months, will now miss next week's trip to Norway.
