Turk stabbed to death in Istanbul

A 29-YEAR-OLD Turk was stabbed to death in Istanbul late last night by his friend after the two watched a league match between Galatasaray and Besiktas.

The murder, reported in the Istanbul newspaper Hurriyet, comes after the murders of two British fans ahead of the UEFA Cup semi-final, first leg between Galatasaray and Leeds United on April 6.

Hurriyet said the victim, Recep Altinorak, and his friend Cem Temur, 19, watched the Besiktas-Galatasaray match together in a cafe in the Avcilar district on the city's European side.

The two left the cafe after the match, which ended 1-1, and began quarrelling while drinking wine, Hurriyet reported. Altinorak, who was stabbed seven times, died after being rushed to hospital.

Police apprehended Temur, who escaped from the spot after the murder, early today and launched a probe into the incident.
