The Historical Truth Behind...

This is directly from the information written by Watsuki-san at the end of Act Eight in the Manga. The Secret Life of Characters (6).

Sano's motif is one Harada Sanosuke.

Harada Sanosuke was the Captain of the of the Shinsengumi's 10th division. He was among the top five best looking guys in the Shinsengumi, for what it's worth. He was a spear wielder with a renowned strength and was active in every decisive battle of the Shinsengumi. Harada Sanosuke was rough mannered and short tempered, though he was known to have a softer side. He came from humble beginnings. He was considerate of his comrades and took special care with his subordinates. Quick to pass judgment and prone to seeing things in black and white, Harada Sanosuke could probably be seen as a "big brother" type of character common in Manga for young men.

Accepted history states that Harada Sanosuke was K.I.A. during the Ueno war, but legend has him crossing the continent (to China) and becoming chief of his very own bandit army. To his contemporaries, no doubt, he must have been quite a dashing figure. "Obviously , Watsuki liked him quite abit as well, and wanted him for RuroKen. Thus was born Sagara Sanosuke."
