How It Came to Be

Author’s Note: This story is about how Queen Serenity became queen and how Serena was born. The story shall end when Queen Serenity dies from using the Silver Crystal.

Brinn Moonlight sighed as she walked in the palace gardens. Sabrina was her real name, but everybody who knew her called her Brinn.

“Brinn! You come back here right now to finish your embroidery!” Her older sister, Sarah shouted from the garden swing. Brinn ignored her. “Brinn, Sewing Mistress is going to have a fit if you don’t finish your embroidery.” Sarah said, trying to get Brinn to do her homework.

“Sarah, you never liked anything the mistresses told you to do.” Brinn said quietly.

“I know, but you’re luckier. I have straight jet-black hair, while you have straight golden hair. You can look at people through your eyelashes, and I can look people in the eye. You have all the princess qualities. And better yet, you are a princess!” Sarah sighed. “I’m a princess too, but I don’t have the princess qualities.”

“Well, I’ll finish my embroidery after I finish my magic homework.”

“You know princesses can’t take magic courses until they’re 20.”

“I know, but I’m taking it anyway, even though I’m only 18.”

Sarah shook her head. “You are as stubborn as a mule!”

Brinn took that as a compliment, then she practiced turning herself invisible. That was her homework. She started chanting:

“In the dark of the night,

I shall prepare to fight,

Albeggeroleen!”

Brinn turned invisible. “Can you see me?” She asked.

“No, I can’t see you. Does that mean you’re invisible?” Sarah asked excitedly.

“I think so.” replied Brinn and she chanted again:

“In the dark of the night,

I have finished my fight,

Abeggeroleena!”

Brinn reappeared. “That was a cool experience.” She said and sat down on the garden swing, next to Sarah. Brinn picked up a needle and threaded some pink thread in the tiny whole and started sewing tiny pink flowers on the edges of her white silk handkerchief. When she finished that, she used some green thread to sew vines around the handkerchief. Sarah whispered something to Brinn and Brinn grinned and picked up the purple thread. Brinn sewed in cursive, she sewed “Sabrina” in the middle of the handkerchief with the purple thread. Purple was the only color she had left so she used it. Brinn’s favorite colors are pink and purple. When she was done with embroidery, she picked up academic homework and started working on it: math, language arts, social studies, and science.

At dinner, Brinn was working on her art homework, sketching the dinner table. When Charlotte, a maid, saw her drawing during dinner, she quickly told the king and queen. Brinn’s mother walked up to Brinn and looked at what she was sketching and nodded. She turned and walked up to Charlotte, and scolded her. Mrs. Moonlight was telling Charlotte that Brinn was working on her homework and that she should never tattle on Brinn without actually knowing what she was doing. Brinn smiled slyly as Charlotte threw her a dirty look.

After dinner, she finished the sketch of the dinner table and went upstairs to take a bath. After her bath, she brushed her pearly white teeth and climbed the ladder to the top bunk. After a few minutes, Cimorene walked in, lied down on the lower bunk and slept.

When Brinn woke up, it was already 7:45. “I’m late!” Brinn shouted and shot out of bed and into the bathroom.

Cimorene walked into the bathroom at 8:00 and threw Brinn a questioning look. “What are you doing in the bathroom at 8:00?” Sarah asked.

“Oh, don’t tell me you overslept too!” Brinn sighed.

“I think you should know something, Brinn. Today’s Saturday.”

“Oh.” Brinn said quietly and started giggling. Sarah started laughing. “If Manners Mistress ever saw us, she would be horrified. ‘Giggling and laughing is not for young ladies like you to do.’” Brinn imitated Manners Mistress.

That just made Sarah laugh more, until they woke everyone up. “What in the world is so funny?” the queen asked.

“Brinn –hic- thought today –hic- was a –hic- school day –hic-!” Sarah managed to say before she started laughing and hiccuping. Brinn was giggling hard and starting to laugh.

“Well, I guess that’s a good reason to wake everybody up.” the queen said, starting to laugh. Brinn was now laughing.

It took a few more minutes for everyone to calm down. Back in their room, the girls were fighting back hiccups. “Hey, I –hic- remember a –hic- spell which can cure hiccups –hic-!” Brinn shouted.

“Do –hic- it!” Sarah shouted back.

“Okay –hic-.” Brinn said and started chanting:

“As I cure myself from hiccups,

I’ll cure someone else’s too,

Hiccupingeroam!”

The moment Brinn said “myself,” she was cured of hiccups. When Brinn said “someone else’s,” Sarah was cured of the hiccups. Just to make sure the spell wouldn’t be broken, Brinn said “Hiccupingeroam!” a second time. “Now we’ll never have the hiccups again!” Brinn said happily.

“Did I hear someone chant a spell?” Charlotte asked as she entered their room.

“No, I was trying to make up a spell that would get rid of the hiccups.” Brinn said casually.

“And you don’t have the hiccups anymore.” Charlotte said, amused.

“We don’t? It worked, Brinn!” Sarah said, playing along.

Charlotte looked disgusted. “I don’t play such childish games.” She said haughtily and left.

“We really pulled it off this time, didn’t we?” Sarah said.

“We really did.” Brinn agreed, nodding.

The next day, they were prepared to visit the Queen of the Moon. Since the Queen of the Moon was getting quite old, she wanted all the princesses of the galaxy to come and she’ll appoint a new queen. They had to pass certain tests though to be qualified. “Get ready, girls! We must leave earth at exactly 3:00!” Mrs. Moonlight shouted.

“Coming, Mother!” Sarah shouted back.

When they left earth, Brinn looked at the moon and sighed. How wonderful it would be if I was Queen of the Moon, Brinn thought. “Mom, do you think I might win?” Brinn asked her mother.

“Yes, if you try very hard. Now, do you remember what I taught you?” Mrs. Moonlight asked.

“We both remember, Mother.” Sarah answered. Mrs. Moonlight laughed.

“Of course you do, we reviewed them this morning.” Mrs. Moonlight said.

Then, with a great lurch, they were on the moon. “Come this way.” Mrs.
Moonlight instructed the princesses. I wonder if I’ll win? Brinn and Sarah thought together as they saw other princesses entering the Crystal Palace, too.

“Welcome to the 23rd ‘Picking of the New Queen’ festival!” an announcer shouted into his mike. “All princesses shall enter through this door,” he motioned towards a marble door embroidered by diamonds and pearls. “While the parents shall enter through this one,” he motioned towards another door made of mahogany wood.

Brinn and Sarah nervously entered through the door with a bunch of other princesses. “Ow! Watch it!” Brinn snapped as a princess stepped on her foot.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” a princess with brown hair said.

“No, no, no, I didn’t mean to snap at you, I’m sorry.” Brinn said, blushing.

“No, it’s really okay. My name’s Natanya. What’s your name?”

“Brinn, actually it’s Sabrina, but everyone calls me Brinn.”

“How old are you? I’m 19.”

“I’m 18. Do you want to win?”

“Not really, I’m actually the princess of Jupiter, so I’ll be in charge of Jupiter.”

“I want to win. I’m from earth and won’t inherit anything because I have an older sister, and she’ll get the palace.” Brinn said mournfully. “Anyways, shall we go sit?” Brinn gestured towards two chairs.

“Sure.” Natanya answered as they sat down. Then, Queen of the Moon appeared and everything was silent.

“Hello, everyone.” Queen of the Moon greeted. “Welcome! First, I shall call roll. Simply say, ‘here’ when I call on you. Angela, princess of Mercury.”

“Here.” said a blue haired princess. Queen of the Moon droned on and on about manners and what the tests will be after she finished calling role.

“Okay, we shall begin the tests.” she said and clapped her hands and the princesses entered a royal table. “The first test is to test your manners. Thus, we will have a banquet.” Queen of the Moon said as everyone took a seat.

Brinn nudged Sarah and said, “The food looks disgusting. I don’t think I’ll be able to eat this.” She pointed at Escargot.

“It’s earth food, we should be familiar with it. You should have paid attention during French class. It’s typical French food, meaning ‘snail.’” Sarah informed Brinn as Brinn gagged.

Natanya poked Brinn and said, “Do we have to eat that?” she gestured towards a cheese pizza.

“Pizza’s good!” Brinn exclaimed. “You don’t like pizza?”
Natanya looked puzzled. “Pizza? Is that what you call pizza? I’ve never tried it, but it looks disgusting.”

“Pizza is only about the most delicious food in the world! Earth, that is.”

“Girls, let’s get started with the banquet.” Queen of the Moon announced as she sat down and just looked straight ahead. One princess already started eating and the queen quickly told the guards to take her away. “‘Tis a pity, a princess should always know not to eat before the host has started eating.” She said and shook her head sympathetically after the princess was gone.

“Harsh,” Sarah muttered under her breath as Queen of the Moon started eating.
Brinn sliced herself a slice of pizza and started to cut it into itty-bitty pieces. I wish I could pick it up, Brinn thought. But I have to remember what Mom said: “Never pick up your pizza, it’s not polite to do so in a formal banquet. Always cut it up in little pieces and then eat it.”

One princess looked at her pizza and picked up her pizza. Queen of the Moon motioned to the guards to take her away. “Never, ever, pick up your pizza, it isn’t polite to do so in a formal banquet. Always cut it in little pieces.” Queen of the Moon said.

Natanya looked at the pizza and sliced herself the most little piece imaginable. She cut it up and nibbled on one piece. She chewed, swallowed, and whispered to Brinn, “It is good!”

“I told you.” Brinn said teasingly and grinned. After they finished eating, three quarters of the princesses were already gone.

“There’s only 25 princesses left!” Sarah told Natanya and Brinn nervously. “And we’re in the top 25!”

“Now that we only have 25 princesses left, let me see how well you can solve problems…” Queen of the moon announced grandly.

After a few more tests, Sabrina won. And her name became Serenity.

Serenity’s reigning life is in Chapter 2. Please wait patiently while I work on it. So far I’m drained out of ideas and it might take a few months for me to finish “How It Came to Be”. Also, if you’re waiting for Episode 2 of “The New Scouts Appear”, please send me some ideas! I don’t have any ideas for “The New Scouts Appear”!
