May

May 11 and 12 was International Festival Celebration, usually held in Tsukuba Center. Almost all nationalities living in Tsukuba partake in this activity. One of the highlights of this celebration was the cultural presentation of different nationalities. FAST presented four native dances, namely: Mazurka Boholana, Curacha, Polkabal and Singkil. The latter was performed for the first time under Jessica`s patient and expert tutelage in place of tinikling. It was a very colorful, elaborate and exciting presentation with kids having a part in it for the first time. The practices held prior to the festival paid off well. Everyone was satisfied with the performance.

The group also sold some native dishes, juices, San Miguel beer, and sweets in their booth, which was decorated based on a fiesta concept complete with banderitas, posters and brochures courtesy of the Philippine Embassy.

After the festival, an Osukare Party was held at Friends on May 13. The Officers and members altogether watched the video footage of the group's dance presentation. Flowers were given to Jessica as a symbol of gratitude for leading the group's dance presentation.

On May 25, a general assembly was held. Among the items included in the agenda were:

  • Evaluation of the Nikko Trip, and International Festival

  • Creation of a new e-group account (FAST 2002) to be used for the informal email messages of the members, and

  • Plans for the Independence Day Celebration.
