As you cross the Snowy Mountains and are on the top of the mountain range at a place called "Dead Horse Gap" you can look down onto Threadbo Village a top ski resort and village.
On one trip up there I came across three horses that appeared to be eating stones on the side of the road. As there are no fences in the Snowy mountains these had to be brumbies, nice looking ones at that and the first I have ever seen as they are normally in the mountains away from main roads
They did not appear to be very worried about me or my car so I very slowly crawled closer to see if I could get a better shot. I managed to drive to where I took this photo, about 30 feet from them.
I then drove past them very slowly and parked the car and got out and walked up to within about 20 ft of them. They completely ignored me, and at first I thought they were eating the blue metal from the edge of the road, but in fact they were sucking the stones and spitting them out. At this point of time I decided maybe I should not be this close to wild horses so I moved back to my car where I watched them for about half an hour. I considered myself very lucky to have had this experience.
I was later told that "Black Ice" formed here and salt was spread to melt it / give traction. In turn when the ice melted the salt was washed to the edge of the road and this was what attracted the Brumbies.
Here you can see where they have been digging with their front hooves and in fact making the road edge very dangerous for anyone coming up at any sort of speed.
The holes were about 18" deep and about three ft across
Fox Hunt on Henry Filtness property, a catch of 40-50 was not uncommon
Des's Call To Arms now hanging on my wall
This house was built in 1900 and this is the day they moved in. Note the guy on the far left with rifle, his wife nursing a grandchild , Flagons of grog and a fellow playing a squeeze box, all dressed in their Sunday best!
I had afternoon tea with Mrs. Golby in this house around 2001 she was quite elderly and living by herself, only addition was electricity that she had only had for a few years! There was a child buried in a front garden and another beside the house fence, no markers of any sort.
Rita's old house, a spring here had the sweetest water around, The new owner wanted to build a new house on it about 1980 but the permit was refused and he was told to rebuild what was there!
I know you will find it hard to believe but the old place caught fire and burnt to the ground before the fire trucks could get there, there was a strong smell of kero -- must have been a kero lamp inside somewhere!!
My sister Carmel did this painting of the old house but from the other side of the photo above.

This is exactly the same as our home in Nth Albury before moving to Melbourne, except ours was set back about 70 feet from the front fence with four square garden beds filling the front area. Our house has been pulled down many years ago and no photos exist of it. It was a common design and finding this one was not hard, in fact I found it at Walla Walla where we had just moved from!! As a child growing up I spent many happy years here with all the fishing and shooting and rabbit hunting with ferrets, what more could a child ask for?
