GUYBRUSH THREEPWOOD - The hero of the game. As per usual, Guybrush was bumbling, inept and naive, but blessed with the kind of extraordinary luck and cartoon physiology that allowed him to be shot out of a pirate cannon, spend hours underwater without running out of air, and undergo all manner of extreme pain without so much as a squeak of explanation. One of the great computer heroes of our time.
GOVERNOR ELAINE MARLEY - Elaine Marley was an ex-pirate herself who'd made good and become the fair and just ruler of Mêlée Island (Guybrush's home). Like any woman given just a smidgen of power she was, of course, an icy cold bitch. Eventually however, Guybrush won her heart (mainly by saving her from becoming LeChuck's wife) and the two lived happily ever after - until the sequel that is, when it was revealed that the pair had split and hadn't seen each other in ages.
GHOST PIRATE LECHUCK - The evil Ghost Pirate LeChuck was both a ghost and, er, a pirate. Commanding a fearsome crew of the undead (I say fearsome - they were more like the underworld equivalent of Dad's Army), LeChuck had originally set out to conquer Mêlée Island and marry Governor Elaine Marley, before Guybrush stumbled in his way. For the sequel, LeChuck plotted his revenge and was only prevented by Guybrush overcoming the power of 'Big Whoop'.
THE VOODOO LADY - Where would Guybrush be without the helpful hands of this woman? Well, probably nowhere. She certainly isn't to be messed with, given that she has voodoo magic at her fingertips and can conjure up a fully functional voodoo-doll from the remains of last nights Chinese take-away.
OTIS - Was framed and imprisoned on Mêlée Island before Guybrush set him free and offered him the chance to be part of a crew destined for Monkey Island. He duly accepted the offer and spent most of his days aboard the ship doing much the same as everyone else... relaxing. He had bad breath and his aunt made a lousy slice of carrot cake.
THE SWORD MASTER - Undisputed master of the sword. Carla, as she was also known, hailed from Mêlée Island and was feared by all ("You're good enough to fight the Sword Master!"). Guybrush managed to beat her in a dual though, but how much that was to do with him being the main character and having to beat her in order to progress, I don't know. She was another member of Guybrush's crew in Monkey Island 1 and worked just as hard as Meathook (oh dear).
MEATHOOK - This fearful giant lived on Hook Isle for a time (Mêlée Island), alone with his pet 'beast'. He was noble enough to join Guybrush's crew for Monkey Island, and sit around on the ship sipping high-percentage alcohol drinks and improving his suntan! Meathook had hooks for hands too.
CAPTAIN SMIRK - Smirk taught Guybrush how to use a sword and insult people.
STAN - Aah good old Stan. Stan worked on Mêlée Island originally, selling used ships to unfortunate passers-by. Following the demise of his ship-selling trade, Stan set up a used-coffin business on Booty Island in Monkey Island 2. This too came to a relatively abrupt end, when he was mysteriously bolted into one of his own showroom coffins. As ever though, the sharp-witted con-man recovered, appearing again in Monkey Island 3 at the helm of a low budget, high profit-making life insurance business. And finaly appearing again in Monkey Island 4 as a timeshare salesman.
HERMAN TOOTHROT - Set out aboard The Sea Monkey with his mate in search of Monkey Island and found it! Unfortunately, his mate was later killed when he accidentally hung himself putting up a swing (apparently). Herman appeared in Monkey Island 2 on Dinky Island, where hed taken to preaching unorthodox philosophy.
THE CANNIBALS - The Cannibals lived on Monkey Island with Herman Toothrot, although the two rarely lived in harmony (what with Herman being human and them being cannibals!). Lemonhead (far left) was the stupid one, yet he was the only one ever to appear again, in Monkey Island 3. Isn't that always the way!

NAVIGATOR'S HEAD - This head was constantly being used. People used him and once they'd finished, just discarded him. I wonder if he was ever truly loved, did he ever find true happiness? He hasn't even got a full picture on this page, LOOK! Handy for findin' your way 'round though wasn't he! Let's be honest, it's just a head, and what we really wanted was his necklace, and he wouldn't even give that up. Selfish head, selfish head! OFF WITH HIS, er... ears! And now to the somewhat minor characters:
THREE-HEADED MONKEY - A monkey with three heads, funnily enough.
GHOST PIRATE - Thatll be another walking ghost pirate then. Beware root beer!
GHOST PRIEST - Came ever so close to marrying LeChuck and two strange Caribbean monkeys.

BOB - Bob was a reluctant crewmember on LeChuck's underground ghost ship, and formed part of an onboard musical band. He was once a Mêlée Islander but lost contact with his old friends after recruitment.
