JZA70 Supra 1JZ-GTE

Well my first car wasn't even close to being a hi-po machine, but i am very proud to be the owner of a gz10 toyota soarer. Its an '85 model and has the 2.0 1g-ge residing under the bonnet. Not exacly ballsy but it is a great cruiser. There was a 1g-gte twin turbo variant of this motor which still doesn't feel exciting in an overly heavy gz20 soarer or ga70 supra, but would make a great conversion if transplanted into a much lighter car, for example the earlier sprinters or celicas. I picked up the soarer in august of '96 and still love the thing.

The extent of mods to this car is very limited, including a 2.25" remus exhaust, 16" v-sport wheels with 225/50 rubber and lowered suspension. It has a 5-speed manual box from the factory, which has suprised alot of people who know anything about these cars.

The current model soarer's are a fucking stunning car ('91 -on), with the same motor as my supra under the bonnet as well as a four litre V8 ... toyota have done extremely well im making these overweight luxo tanks feel like they are actually lighter than they are, without compromising the solid feeling these cars give. Ever since the soarer i don't think i could go back to a small fart-box, no matter how decent the motor is!

My current car is a bit more enjoyable to drive. Its a '91 jza70 supra with the 1jz-gte 2.5 twinturbo inline six.
I picked up the supra in february of '99, after waiting over 4 months for the bastard to arrive! Getting hold of 5-speed supras, as well as having the 1jz under the bonnet doesn't come around very often. My car was pretty much one of the first jza70 supras that the importers brought over to WA and i still feel lucky about getting my hands on it... if i hadn't grabbed the manual supra which arrived 4 months after i enquired, I would have been waiting a total of fucking 8 months as the next manual jza70 wasn't complied & sold until june of '99! It also has an electric sunroof, which isn't found on too many mkiii supras.

The jza70 supra was sold from august '90 right up to may '93, just before the release of the mkiv. I am very impressed with this car as I have always loved the styling of the mkiii supra but was let down by with the stock performance of the 7mg 3.0 turbo in such a heavy car, as 90% of supras in WA are bone stock. A modified 7mg is a totally different story, which has been overwhelmingly pointed out to me by a few US supra enthusiasts. I soon found out that they were also released with the 1g-gte 2.0 twinturbo on board but this motor has no more to offer than the stock 7mg. (from what I've heard and seen over here in WA basically a stock 3.0 auto and 2.0 auto are pretty much even performance wise).

The 1jz-gte in standard form produces around 280ps or about 208kw at the motor.
Mods include a hks evc, set at a max 16psi, but only running at 12psi atm as very slight detonation on premium fuel is sometimes evident. Stock boost, without the aid of an ebc, is around 10.5psi. I have heard from a few guys that stock boost is around 12.5psi, but it seems to me to be closer to 10.5psi. 0.7 - 0.75 kg/cm2 has been mentioned to me numerous times by supra enthusiasts residing in japan, and from experience with my car this seems to be true. Once i get a downpipe fitted im sure that the stock boost will bring itself up to about the 12psi mark, as the factory equipment is quite restrictive.

The computer has been reprogrammed in japan with a blitz access computer. This has remapped the igniton and fuel settings giving them a more aggressive nature and allowing boost to be increased without any dramas... it has also shifted the fuel-cut to at least after 17psi as that is the furthest i have taken the engine, and has eliminated the 180km/h speed restriction. The igniton has been advanced for optimum performance with use of high quality japanese unleaded, which is of a higher octane rating than our premium unleaded. I am now deciding in whether to invest in an apexi itc, shovel in octane booster every time i fill up, running on bp100, shell100 etc or trying to get the chip removed and/or remapped (which i think is basically impossible as i've been told the computer has to be sent to blitz in japan to be reprogrammed), so i can run higher boost levels safely.

A hks bov which leaked has just recently has been fucked off, providing heaps better bottom end response, and a k&n airfilter is residing where the crappy hks foam filter once did (it still has the hks piping and looks a bit stupid). I had the hks bov tested and it could only hold 4.5psi in the damaged state that it was in! ... no wonder i felt a strong improvement across the board, not to mention the rich air/fuel mix leaning out a little back to acceptable levels.

Inside the car basically there is the evc unit which has replaced the ashtray and a hks turbo timer residing under the steering wheel .. the next thing i will be picking up in the comming weeks is a boost guage.
Also a c's short-stroke shift kit which shortens the throw of the gearstick without the need of shortening the actual stick has been installed.

It has been lowered with eibach springs and a decent set of struts (more than likely koni adjustables as another bloke with a mkiii supra has had very positive resluts with them) to match the springs will be comming as soon as the funds are available. The stock 16" rims of the 91+ supra suit the car extremely well compared to the shitty flat stockies fitted from '86 - '90. In the future i want to fit 17" rims as the price of 18's & associated costs is way out of my reach, let alone 17's.

Exhaust duties are fulfilled by a twin 85mm hks "N1 legal" system from the cat back with a 106mm tip hanging out the arse end of the car, and soon to come is a hks bolt-on dump pipe from the turbos back and high flow cat to replace the standard one.
