Although a wild plant, this wild pepper is commonly planted because it is believed to be useful as a medicinal herb. The young leaves are also used as a vegetable and as a spice for flavouring. In Thailand wild pepper roots are chewed with salt as a relieve for toothache. In Malaysia the leaves are used to relieve boneache and headache, while in Indonesian the leaves are chewed with betel nut as a remedy for cough and asthma.
