WHO WAS P.RAMLEE
P.Ramlee is to Malaysia what Gilbert & Sullivan are to England and
Rodgers & Hammerstein are to the USA. Actor,
Director,
Songwriter, Singer ..... Tan Sri P.Ramlee
(1929-1973) was truly "Malaysia's Golden
Son".
Born in Penang on March the 22nd 1929,
P.Ramlee began his journey into the
performing arts on the humble ukelele. He
later
took formal music lessons with Tuan
Kamaruddin, studying both the violin and the
guitar.
He strongly felt a need to create new Malay
music to fill the gap which he perceived
existed in the repertoire of the 1940's. He
was a prolific songwriter, writing mainly
songs for films in which he both acted and
sang. He acted in over 70 films between
1948 and 1972 in which he sang more than 200
songs. He was mainly influenced by Hindustani
film music, though he eventually
created a distinctive Malay style which
contained elements derived from keroncong
music.
P.Ramlee released songs from many Malay films
under the H.M.V. label. Contractual disputes
led to a temporary sabbatical
from the recording industry between 1952 to
1955. During this time, many of his
compositions were recorded by various other
popular Malaysian vocalists.
P.Ramlee was undoubtedly the most famous
local popular artiste of the 1950s, and
perhaps the most well-known and loved
Malaysian artiste of all time.
