CANADA EDITION

RELEASE PERIOD : 1985—1986 The only Garbage Pail Kids set manufactured in Canada for distribution, under the O-Pee-Chee Company name for the Topps Chewing Gum Company, was the 1st Series which was released throughout Canada in 1985 and the beginning of 1986.  The cards are almost identical to the U.S. version with the O-Pee-Chee label placed on the box and wrapper with English and French-Canadian translations.  The cards measure 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 and come four to a wax pack with a slab of gum, unlike the U.S. version, which comes five cards to a wax pack and a slab of gum.  The experienced collector would be able to tell the difference between the Canadian and U.S. cards; the edges of the Canadian cards are somewhat rougher, or not as clean-cut, as the U.S. version and the slab of gum is extremely thin. This is also the case for other sets printed in Canada but distributed in the United States.

— The box and wrapper have the O-Pee-Chee Label with French-Canadian writing. — The Card Edges Are Rougher (not as clean-cut) as the U.S. version. These same edges can be found for the 9th Series U.S. print runs manufactured in Canada. The cards for the 4th and 5th Series print runs manufactured in Canada appear to have regular edges. — Only Matte Finish Card Backs have been found in the Canadian 1st series; Gloss finish backs have not been found. — The O-Pee-Chee release was one of the initial GPK International releases and may have been a test run for the Canadian demographic area; no other GPK OPC set was distributed in Canada.
