year 2020 continued to see a plethora of new GPK licenses and new product from
existing contracts. Alphabetically the major licensed agreements with Topps for
the Garbage Pail Kids brand included Just Funky, Surreal Entertainment, Toynk
Toys, USAopoly®. Pre-existing licenses saw new merchandise from ABRAMS Books,
ChalkLine, FYE®, Geeki Tikis®, Greenlight®, Super7, TruffleShuffle,
Jago Studios, Ripple Junction, WWE, et cetera. There also exists pending deals
or limited product released by other licensees including Leo Challenge Coins (coined
'GPK Nation') in partnership with Adam F. Goldberg to raise funds for future GPK
projects. Forecast Agency decided against some GPK apparel, but created some for
Tilly's in 2021. Fright Rags announced new gear for February 2021. |

PLANS BIG PUSH FOR 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF 'GARBAGE PAIL KIDS' "New Licensees Include USAopoly, Abrams, ChalkLine, More. Topps is planning a big push for the 35th anniversary of Garbage Pail Kids in 2020, with more licensing, a dramatically expanded publishing program, new original content, experiential activations, and a supporting publicity campaign. New licenses include USAopoly, for a branded Monopoly; Abrams, for a middle-school book series; ChalkLine, Surreal Entertainment, Just Funky, and more. Existing licensees with new introductions include Geeki Tikis, Super 7, Ripple Junction, Mondo, FYE Consumables, Creepy Co., Fright Rags, and more. To support the increased licensed product stream and Topps’ expanded Garbage Pail Kids publishing program, the company plans a number of new marketing initiatives. Garbage Pail Kids characters will be making their first appearances at trade shows and comic conventions, with fan-oriented, 35th anniversary programming showcasing original art and collaborating artists. Topps also plans to continue its new program of video shorts, supported with paid and organic social media marketing (first video embedded below). The
Forecast Agency, based out of Los Angeles, CA, became a new license holder for
the GPK Brand in mid-2020, and launched some apparel product through Tillys in
late March to early April of the following year, in 2021. The company decided
against releasing some new GPK characters through their own company, which would
have been under their 'Select Start' clothing line that was established in 2020,
but does not seem to have expanded. The now defunct website page simply states
"Profile | Select Start: We take graphic, silhouette and dye inspiration
from vintage apparel scattered around the world. Our goal is to bring people together
with meaningful designs ..." Garbage Pail Kids is still listed as a licensing
partner as of 2024. The 'S + Delta' symbol, seen on ADAM's t-shirt, was the line's
symbol... where 'select' + 'start' are two buttons found on videogame controller

Per Simko: "the original flavor of Bony Tony's Skull Crunch was supposed to be blue crispies only with white marshmallows; blueberry flavor. I came up with the flavors and character choices. Bony Tony's box design was all finished and painted, but last minute FYE mentioned they no longer had the blue crispies anymore!" Geeki Tikis GPK mugs had their initial launch at NYCC 2019 last year and will
have a Series 2 release this Fall in 2020. Beeline Creative, Inc., based out of
southern California, is a toy and consumer products company with offices in Marina
del Rey, Hong Kong and China, founded in 2013 by Brandon Giraldez. The Beeline
company creates a variety of novelty products including drinkware, housewares,
bobbleheads, action figures, etc. The Beeline Creative company already had a pre-existing
license with Topps for their Mars Attacks! property. A fourth character, Hot SCOTT,
was also a candidate in production for Series 1 but the color wasn't coming out
correctly. No promo cards were released for the second installment to save on
production costs. The packaging is red and black. Both Series 1 and Series 2 Geeki Tikis were added to the Fanatics.com website in late October, early November, 2023, and to their affiliate accounts BackstageMerch.com and Lids.com (Locker Room by Lids). The 'Unfare AARON' nomenclature was also not chosen and is a combination of the two words 'unfair' and taxi cab 'fare'. Goldberg, posted a sneak peek of the 'challenge coin' to social media on July 21, 2020; stating: "Officially Licensed Topps 35th Anniversary Garbage Pail Kids coins...should Adam F. Goldberg release them now or wait a few months?" The coin went up for sale the same day on a very small scale production. Three coins are planned in total for the set. Pail Kids 35th Anniversary GPK Challenge Coin : Sale #5-#9 The GPK Nation social media Facebook page was created on August 1, 2020 and the gold-plated coins were hinted at and the upcoming five-coin release with corresponding enamel pins: "Excited for the upcoming 5-coin series. I expect it to drop next month and guess what - extremely limited run of parallels pin sets to go with them and not cheap pins churned out by a machine...rare, high-end, collectible GPK Masterpieces!" Created by noted graphic designer Hydro74. A month later, Adam Goldberg took to social media on September 2, 2020 to drop additional information on the new playing card 'coin': "A few months ago, I got a sneak peek at some amazing GPK playing cards. I loved them so much I asked Louis Gregory if he could put the artwork onto a new run of Topps GPK coins. He went and created something I've NEVER seen before. Behold our next run of Garbage Pail Kids challenge coins! These are made from the cards themselves and are truly stunning pieces of art and licensed by Topps. Our first in the series drops this Friday at 1pm EST at GPKnation.com! Only 100 made and individually numbered. 1 per customer." Louis Gregory took to social media on September 3, 2020 to further mention: "... There will be 5 coins in the first series. The 1st coin will be Sy Clops. There will be 100 available, each with their own individual serial number. They drop TOMORROW at 1pm EST at GPKnation.com. Did I mention these are over a quarter inch thick and can stand up on their own?"  Later stating, "Here is the run down for tomorrow's 1pm EST launch at GPKnation.com - all items are Officially Licensed by Topps. We will launch 3 separate items for this drop...! 1. We will be launching the first coin from the GPK playing card collection. It is large, thick, and heavy...plated in black nickel. Each coin has its own serial number and it is over a quarter inch thick so it can stand upright to display without requiring a holder. These are limited to 1 per order. There were only 100 made. The coin will arrive in a large Licensed by Topps branded velvet pouch; this is a truly breathtaking piece and we put so much work into getting it just right. 2. The final GPK pin in our inaugural 5-pin collection will drop tomorrow - it's the Adam Bomb pin. As you may have figured out, the 5-pin set was a teaser for the GPK Playing Card coins which begin dropping now...in order words, the pins match the playing card coins so hopefully you were able to score them so they can chill out in your collection, together! The 24-card set made its debut at the San Diego Comic Con over the extended weekend of July 17th thru the 22nd. Universal Studios Monsters™ plays tribute to the 'Universal Classic Monsters' films by Universal Pictures during the 1920s through the 1950s including the classics Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, et cetera. The P1 Atomic ADAM card, painted by GPK artist BRENT Engstrom, was dropped on Wednesday night, August 5, 2020. Each WAX cloud wallet account holder received the exclusive digital card plus a parallel version of the image to chase; viewable via Atomic Assets only. The artwork was used to promote the Blockchain Heroes launch and marks the first time original GPK artwork was created for the digital 'card-collecting' realm. NOTE: The fore(head) skin curlycue, great touch. The August release also had a redeemable PHYSICAL card set via a digital token, not sure if this inclued the GPK promo image. The 750 pre-sale retail decks went live on the Atomic Hub, after a Blockchain meeting, on July 22, 2020. Digital tokens were dropped and went up for sale for three consecutive nights. Preproduction test samples of six of the Atomic ADAM cards, minus the stagnant promo, were listed on eBay in October, 2020. The press release stated: Today, Topps has started a limited time event called “BURN for GOLD” that allows holders of Garbage Pail Kids’ Series 2 BASE cards to burn them in exchange for brand new Gold level cards. By burning excess BASE cards in the series, Topps removes them from circulation. This increases the value of GPK Series 2 cards, and gives collectors a chance to own extremely limited, GOLD minted blockchain collectibles. Burn events on the blockchain have taken place before but what makes this program unique is that it is structured as a sort of blind-submission lottery-type event with achievable goals for each tier. In a perfect scenario one collector could win a limited GOLD minted card for each of the tiers. Starting
in 2019, the WWE had previously partnered with Ripple Junction, Chalk-Line, Rock'Em
Socks, and Spencer's to create apparel for their WWE x GPK clothing line. The
dream wrestling mash-up was kicked off by a 2019 online card set of the same name.
More information can be found on the '2019 Online' page within the Yearly section,
and on the '2019 & 2021 License' pages. Starting on March 2, 2021, Hot Topic
began to carry a select variety of WWE x GPK T-shirts via a new Topps license.
However, after the 'Wave 1' characters were created, a second wave of characters
were created between June & August, 2019, that covered rivalry factions, which
went unreleased. 
 Artist JOE Simko created a mashup of wrestling personalities Kane & Undertaker (part of the Bone Street Krew, aka BSK)... on March 3, 2024, Joe posted the image to his social media channels, stating "Officially licensed GPK x WWE art I designed 4 years ago to be sold as t-shirts. Unfortunately time shows that this may never be released, so sharing it now." Another grouping, paying homage to N.W. O. (New World order, aka nWo), and a nomenclature shout-out to the English new wave band, New Order, contained the Scott Hall (Razor Ramon) & Kevin Nash characters spray-painting in OS1 New Wave DAVE style. A test shirt was sent to Topps as a sample in February 2020. Besides t-shirts, these characters would most likely have been released in card format as well, in 2020, similar to the 2019 Online WWE set release. 
 Artist BRENT Engstrom created two concepts for D-Generation X (DX), an unused concept of the tag team deteriorating, in a literal sense, and a second concept, with OS1 Up CHUCK props, that contained DX (middle block acronym) wrestling members Paul 'Triple H' Levesque (left blocks initials) and Shawn 'The Heartbreak Kid' (aka HBK) Michaels (right blocks initials), with the three 'SUCK IT' baby bottles showcasing the infamous 'crotch chop' salute. Engstrom was asked to put the DX and Jake "the Snake" characters on a black background, for ease of t-shirt application, but nothing released. 
 Artist BRENT Engstrom also created a piece for Jake "the Snake" Roberts (Aurelian Smith Jr.), comically wrestling and being attacked by his pet python snake Damien, along with a 'split'-personality piece of Hulk Hogan (Terry Gene Bollea), displaying his 80's Hulkamania side and his 90's nWo persona. In April 2020, Hulk Hogan caused some controversy by suggesting the world may not need a vaccination for coronavirus and claiming the pandemic is an act of God (... I can't argue we need a good dieback for this poor planet!), along with racist comments in May 2020which may have hurt any potential release (at least of this particular character). |
