1986
FRENCH GERMAN DUTCH 'TEST SETS' Although Topps Ireland released several Garbage Pail Kids test sets throughout the last half of the 80's, into the early 90's, in several different countries. These so-called 1st Series 'test sets' of forty-four cards were released in Belgium (and possibly France) with French text, in Germany and regions of Denmark with German text, and also in the Netherlands with Dutch text, including the two Holland provinces. These sets were a direct reproduction of the 1986 UK GPK 1st Series test box release that contained the A-name card characters only. Unfortunately, no direct sequel sets were produced for these countries that contained a localized translation of the card content. However the Netherlands did receive the UK 2nd Series, etc. (in English text). The sets are often referred to as 'test sets' considering they followed the same testing as the UK 1st Series release, but had no follow-up releases, whereas the UK produced B-name boxes and then combined 'A' and B-names within boxes for the later productions. The three translated 'test set' sections are listed below for comparison. |
The Garbage Pail Kids
brand was released as a 44-card variation test set with no twin cards in Belgium
(and France?) in 1986alongside the UK 1st Series set. The card set was manufactured
by the Topps Ireland company and many similar test sets were released to several
surrounding countries over a period of several years. The card character nomenclature,
'PEEL HERE' arrow, and reverse card text is printed in French text; the cards
measure 2 1/8 X 3 inches and are non-die cutpeeling from the edges. The
box and wrapper packaging is the same for all three test sets, with the cards
sealed and sold in the same cellophane wrapper as the UK 1st Series release, but
the price for the French release was '10 BF'which stands for 10 Belgium
Francs. A few years later, two sets of Les Crados were released in France and
an All-New Series set was released in 2004. |

Along with the German and Dutch test set releases, the French character cards
can be found with singular Nomenclature only and
no twin card. This makes the test set smaller and exactly like the U.K.
1st Series test set with only A-name card boxes; with the exact same packaging. Three variation backs for cards #5, #8 and #29 can be found with regular backs and Checklist backs; the same variations as the U.S., UK and New Zealand card backs. The checklist contains a check-box square and a capital 'A' after the card number, much like the Dutch checklist, but unlike the German checklist. Although the set is a direct reproduction of the UK 1st Series test set release, including the 'PEEL HERE' arrow, the nomenclature and reverse card type is printed In French text. The header still remains Garbage Pail Kids for the test releases. Card Sample: 37a Guillio TINA; spelled as 'Guillio Tine' on the checklist. Per the checklist, there is no similar Nomenclature as the U.S., UK, Australia and New Zealand sets like there is with both the German and Dutch test sets. The set contains No Puzzle; exactly like the set it was reproduced from. |

The Garbage Pail Kids brand
was released in 1986 as a 44-card variation test set with no twins in Germany
and German-speaking regions of Denmark, Austria, and other possible territoriesright
after the UK 1st Series set. The card set was manufactured by the Topps Ireland
company and many test sets were released to several surrounding countries over
a period of several years. The card character nomenclature,
'PEEL HERE' arrow, and reverse card text is printed in German text; the cards
measure 2 1/8 X 3 inches and are non-die cutpeeling from the edges. The
box and wrapper packaging is the same for all three test sets, with the cards
sealed and sold in the same cellophane wrapper as the UK 1st Series release. The
price for the German release was either 'DM' (which stands for 'D-Mark' or Deutsche
Mark), 'DKK' (which stands for Danish Krone), or 'S or öS' (which stands
for Austrian Schilling), depending on where the product was sold. Years later,
in 1994, a set of Die Total Kaputtan Kids was released in Germany showcasing later
characters from other U.S. GPK sets and a Swedish All-New Series GPK set, released
in 2005, was also released in Denmark. |

The '4' represents a sheet (uncut sheet, sell sheet, etc.), the '494' represents the product (OS1 GPK), the '2' represents the particular production run, and '6' the year of release (1986). Credit: HUGE thanks to collector Henry Mora for the exciting image. Card 8A ADAM Bom has similar Nomenclature as its UK counterpart 8a ADAM Bomb, as well as card 37A Guilliotina and 37a GuilloTINA.
