RELEASE PERIOD : NOVEMBER 1986 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-6

The two production runs of the 6th Series Garbage Pail Kids, aka Original Series 6 or OS6, for short, are exactly the same except for their wrappers. There are no card-back variations within the set and this is the first GPK set with 44 different character images that fills the entire uncut sheet with no repeats. The first production run wrapper has the 25¢ price with a yellow star within the yellow spotlight background, however, the 25¢ price is changed to a white star at some point within the first production so it would stand out against the background and contains the -09- wrapper code. The second production run, intended for hobby stores, has a wrapper without the 25¢ price, no star, and contains the -10- wrapper code. The overall production of GPK, in general, has been reduced to two production runs, with no assistance from Canada, and no extra rak-pak or jumbo packs released for the set.

The New Product Development team had artist James Warhola tested out on the card fronts to paint alongside full-time artists John Pound and Tom Bunk for the set, while underground comix artist Jay Lynch was brought on board to paint the card-back images. Both Warhola and Lynch would remain on the team for the rest of the run of the Original Series GPK sets, with Warhola painting the main artwork and Lynch either painting, writing, or both, for the backside.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY —ANNOTATED NOMENCLATURE

The only GPK wrapper to have a 25¢ CHEAP star color change; in the first print run the '25¢ CHEAP' star is yellow as part of the background and then changed to a white '25¢ CHEAP' star logo to have the price stand out more. After five previous wrappers having a yellow explosion background, this is the first of three with a new, yellow circle, spotlight-shaped backdrop.

The completed Puzzle for the OS6 is sequential with the OS5 set which contained the D-puzzle and E-puzzle. The puzzles continue to have 21 pieces and the set is back to having just one puzzle similar to the OS4 set for card characters 250a Newly-Dead ED and 250b Dyna MIKE for the F-puzzle within the set.

The second set with a light pink Nameplate; the set contains a dark blue, dark pink, yellow, red and light pink nameplate ... no light blue nameplate in this release.

The series has two cards with the Same Forename for cards 208b Teed-Off TOM and 218a TOM Thumb.

The only series with an object as the Nameplate; cards 210a Intense PAYNE and 210b First ADA contain a Band-Aid or plaster as the unprecedented nameplate. The Band-Aid or plaster is part of the final artwork and, as seen on Pound's pencil art, was part of the original tight pencil as well; the only thing removed was the creased forehead wrinkle.

The first set not to depict the ADAM Bomb character mascot on the Wrapper or box front but instead putting the spotlight on a different OS1 Kid; the character for cards 14a Potty SCOTTY and 14b JASON Basin, seen within the Production section above.

The character nomenclature is printed with the forename 'TODD' on the Nameplate in bold but the font is smaller than the large-in-size word 'TOTALED' for card 237a Totaled TODD.

The first set to have a card showcasing Nomenclature from previous card releases; cards 246a JOHN John and 246b Flushing FLOYD that pay tribute to two older GPK characters whose names are written on the bathroom wall. The OS3 character 220b Jelly KELLY with a hand print above her name and the OS1 character 14a Potty SCOTTY with the words 'WUZ HERE' below his name, whom coincidentally finds himself on the packaging for this release.

The only veritical or horizontal card with the PEEL HERE arrow in a different corner for cards 241a Old GLORIA and 241b JOSE Can You See; the arrow is placed in the lower right-hand corner as to not interfere with the artwork and die cut in the upper left-hand corner. The 'PEEL HERE' arrow has been switched from facing the right direction to facing the left direction.

The unused Nomenclature that artist John Pound had suggested on the tight pencil artwork for cards 240a Radar RAY and 240b EVE Droppin' was the name 'ERIC Canal'; = ear canal.

The third set to have an image showcasing Card Characters from previous releases; card images for 248a HECTOR Collector and 248b G.P. KAY pay tribute to several older GPK card images whose stickers are stuck to the character's body. The following card images listed top to bottom: OS2 45a Leaky LINDSAY & 45b Messy TESSIE; OS4 132a Bony TONY & 132b Unzipped ZACK (?); OS1 28a Oozy SUZY & 28b Meltin' MELISSA; OS2 51a RUSSELL Muscle & 51b BRETT Sweat; OS2 66a MATT Ratt & 66b RACHEL Rodent; OS3 103a Wriggley RENE & 103b Curly CARLA (?); OS2 77a Ghastly ASHLEY & 77b Acne AMY; OS1 40a Unstitched MITCH & 40b Damaged DON, and OS1 19a Corroded CARL & 19b Crater CHRIS.

The only set with a Wrapper that does not have the UPC bar code in a white box.

The GPK set contains ten Horizontal cards, one of the greatest number of horizontal card layouts for any release; one-quarter of the set.

The first GPK series with no reverse card back Variations.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY — CARD ANNOTATION

The Original final artwork for cards 248a HECTOR Collector and 248b G.P. KAY was completed by John Pound, which per the art director, Mark Newgarden, wasn't quite working. The character was completed before the OS6 release and intended for the OS5 release, but was later tested out on GPK newcomer, artist James Warhola. Unlike the rendition completed by Warhola, with nine noticeable GPK card characters, there are no distinguishable GPK images from the previous sets that can be found on Pound's artwork containing a total of sixteen stickers. In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a 'Lost Alternate Art' subset that included this John Pound artwork piece with the same naming as the OS printed card.

~
In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a Lost Alternate Art subset that included this John Pound artwork piece with almost the same naming as the OS printed card; 214a Off-Color CLARA, and anagram of CARLA. Although still a paint-by-number theme, the two pieces are very different aesthetically; one character iteration is working with a house paintbrush and paint bucket, whereas the other character is working with a small paintbrush and paint palette.

The below OS6 Wrapper concept artwork was created for the release by Tom Bunk who rendered all the wrapper artwork for the sixteen original GPK sets. This wrapper concept mock up is a tight line drawing of John Pound's OS1 character featured on cards 14a Potty SCOTTY and 14b JASON Basin. Besides the new wrapper mascot the other big change is the 'ALL NEW' series announcement box replacing the jagged half-circle. The Topps logo changes position and a yellow spotlight background added to the image.

Pictured below is an Unpublished painting finished by artist John Pound titled 'PIZZA FACE', a concept was considered for the OS2 set and intended for the OS6 GPK set. The image was the fifth painting (6-5 R) completed by Pound for the OS6 set but was used within the GPK Poster set as #7 Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids instead. The piece was later used placed into the OS16 unpublished set for cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni Toni to replace a rejected piece of artwork. The character was finally published in 2003 for the ANS1 as cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE and 9b Pizza Face CHASE; notice the four fingers instead of three fingers of later OS sets. Per Pound's tight pencil artwork the pizza-face was originally conceptualized 'in (a) pizza pan' and was initially drawn that way.

The artwork for cards 233a WES Mess and 233b Trash-Can KEN, painted by James Warhola, was based off of the Vertumnus painting created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo in 1590. Per Roman mythology, Vertumnus is the God of seasons, gardens, plant growth, fruit trees, etc. The Vertumnus painting itself was based on the Holy Roman Emperor (1576 - 1612) Rudolf II whom greatly appreciated the piece.

The OS6 reverse comic artwork on the card backs were completed by GPK newcomer, artist Jay Lynch. The comics were a Topps spoof on themselves poking fun at their own popular Bazooka Joe comics that came wrapped in the Bazooka gum product. Jay Lynch finished both the art roughs and the final artwork for the comic backs. The text on the card backs were written by Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman for the OS6 release.

During the Garbage Pail Kids card reproduction a Blue-Lines Process is used (aka whiteprint) within the correction process of the set. It is a contact printing process which accurately reproduces the original in size of artwork. Below is one blue-line proof card example as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in 2006; card 241b JOSE Can You See. A blue-line print is not permanent and will fade if exposed to light for weeks or months.

The image from the GPK Poster set #18 BUSTED! painted by artist John Pound is used for the OS5 through OS8 retail ad posters with an enlarged, straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. The original poster contains a much smaller Garbage Pail Kids banner. The 'NEW' yellow color of the OS5 retail poster seen within the 'Product' section has been changed to pink for the OS6 retail poster.

The poster image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! from the GIANT GPK card set with the original curved Garbage Pail Kids header rather than the straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. In both the posters and card, along with various award and license card backs, there are several OS1 and OS2 characters found throughout the image.

OS6 Garbage Pail Kids Uncut Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006. Pictured is the front and back image for the OS6 GPK uncut sheet which shows a section of 44 cards with no variations; this is a 132 card sheet with a 11 x 12 format. Sheet production code # 4-490-05-04-6.

Large GPK Flowcharts were created for the series after the OS4 set which showed Mark Newgarden, the GPK editor how the work of the new set was going. It displayeed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The OS6 contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces by Arthur Shorin within the set, were saved for a later series or never saw the light of day: kid as flag (6th), kid as welcome mat (6th), matchbook kid (12th), in water cooloer (6th), kangaroo (unpublished), cheerleader coming apart, squeezed face (8th), pumping self with bike-pump (8th), blowing bubblegum (9th), pilgrim in stocking, MadMax, trashcan belly (6th), exploding head (6th), ventriloquist hand (6th), wrecked car (6th), skeleton flasher, butcher block (6th), Mr. Dirt (Mr. Clean parody), beetle (unpublished).
