RELEASE PERIOD : APRIL 1987 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-8

The two production runs of the 8th Series Garbage Pail Kids, aka Original Series 8 or OS8, for short, are the same except for their wrappers. The first production print run wrapper has the '25¢ CHEAP' price star and the second print run wrapper is without this logo. After the court case with Original Appalachian Artworks ("OAA"), even though it was ruled that GPK must look less like the Cabbage Patch Kids ("CPK") dolls going forward, any completed work could still be produced, thus the OS8 and OS9 GPK sets were still manufactured and released with the original GPK look and CPK features. The New Product Development team brought back artist Howard Cruse, who previously completed the GPK Giant Series reverse card and border artwork, to assist artist and writer Jay Lynch with the card backs. This would be the last GPK set for the Original Series that Cruse worked on.

The CBS Garbage Pail Kids Saturday morning cartoon was created during this time and set for an autumn, Fall-TV release date, but shelved at the last minute due to public outcry and campaigns to stop the show — see the 'GPK History' section for more information on the Saturday morning cartoon.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY —ANNOTATED NOMENCLATURE

The only series box Packaging with a yellow GPK header surrounded by the color red; pictured above in the 'Production' section. No other box, wrapper or card front can be found with a yellow GPK logo.

The first Garbage Pail Kids set to have a greatly reduced Card Number due to an object within the artwork for cards 309A Heartless HAL and 309B BOWEN Arrow.

The only Wrapper with a red GPK header surrounded by the color yellow, rather than white, much like OS1 cards 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD; the wrapper is pictured above in the 'Production' section.

The only OS set to have the GPK Header as part of the artwork; on the product box of cards 302A Mixed-Up MICK and 302B Artificial MITCHELL. The ONLY Garbage Pail Kids logo that ends in the singular 'KID', rather than the plural, 'KIDS'.

The second set to have a card with The GPK Header found within the artwork itself besides the main logo; the Garbage Pail Kids header found on the photo copy sheets of cards 330A Lotta LOTTA and 330B Dupli-KIT.

The series has two sets of cards with the Same Forename; cards 310A Stinkin’ STELLA and 318B Inter STELLA & cards 305A Grate SCOTT and 332A Sling Scott.

The third set to have a greatly reduced GPK Header in size for cards 311A STU Spew and 311B Slimin’ SIMON.

The fourth set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the GPK acronym found on the hockey jersey of cards 299A BUCK Puck and 299B LOWELL GOAL, on the spacesuit of 318A HALEY's Vomit and 318B Inter STELLA (under the top cord) & on the tombstone of cards 334A ASHLEY To Ashes and 334B DUSTIN To Dust.

The first set to have a card Nameplate with the name in large font, as usual, but the word in bold lettering instead of the first name; card 318A HALEY’s Vomit.

The only GPK series with the Card Number letter 'A' and 'B' found in uppercase instead of lowercase.

Although the Return Address for cards 325A MARCEL Parcel and 325B Handle With CAREN is illegible, minus the California zip code where artist John Pound lives, the package is addressed to the "Topps (Che)wing (Gum) Co" at their principal office and place of business located at 254 36th Street Brooklyn, NY 11232 within the Sunset Park neighborhood, before their relocation. The name is slightly distorted, but the 'c/o' address line may be intended for employee Len Brown.

The fourth set to have a card showcasing GPK Stickers within the artwork, but the sticker images are not characters from previous releases, for cards 328A Glowing AMBER and 328B Bright DWIGHT.

The completed Puzzle for the OS8 set is sequential with the OS7 set which contains the F-puzzle. The puzzles continue to contain 21 pieces and the set is back to having one puzzle like the OS4, OS6 and OS7 sets for card character 263A Explorin' NORMAN and 293B Drillin' DYLAN for the orange border of the H-puzzle.

Artist John Pound had the suggested Nomenclature of 'BUD For You'—possibly from the Budweiser beer slogan 'This Bud's For You'—and 'BUD Spud' for cards 305A Grate SCOTT and 305B REGGIE Veggie, where the originally concept was a chunk of cheese that was replaced with a potato. Pound also had the name 'PRESTON D. Button' for cards 330A Lotta LOTTA and 330b Dupli-KIT per his tight pencil and color rough artwork.

The second Garbage Pail Kids series without a light pink or light blue Nameplate found within the set.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY — CARD ANNOTATION

The mock-up Wrapper artwork was completed during the early production of the OS8 release and rendered by artist Tom Bunk. The green GPK Banner was changed to red and both the banner and sticker plate were given a yellow background. This marks the first set to drop the 'ALL NEW' from the wrapper layout for the series annoucement, except for the OS9 which showcases the slogan within the non-'25¢ CHEAP' star, not to be picked up again until the ALL-NEW Series in 2003. This is the third and final wrapper the yellow background circle is used.

~
The following Unpublished piece by artist Tom Bunk was finished in 1987 and was intended for the OS8 Garbage Pail Kids set. The punk 'Kid' middle finger artwork was completed but was never published with the spiked hair being changed drastically between the concept and color rough pieces. This may have been an internal, tongue-in-cheek artwork nod to the OAA vs. Topps lawsuit results.

Writers Jay Lynch and Art Spiegelman completed the gags for the reverse card GPK Comics artwork. Artist Jay Lynch also worked on the Bazooka Joe-like comic backs by working on the pencil roughs while Howard Cruse completed the final artwork. Some comics were possible left-over pieces from the OS6 comic backs.

The GPK Concept for cards 1a Nasty NICK and 1b Evil EDDIE, created by Mark Newgarden, which displays a Dracula character biting into a Barbie-esque doll; artwork completed by artist John Pound. The original 'Dracula Kid' concept artwork by Pound showed dracula arising from slumber and sitting within his coffin, which contains a fun 'Jack in the Box' pun and a nice Translvania backdrop (see the OS1 'GPK History' section); the overall dark outline gave it a very Wacky Packages feel, the Topps franchise from which the GPK brand was born. The discarded Vanitas-like candle and skull in the concept, painted by John Pound, can be found in this set on cards 328A Glowing AMBER and 328B Bright DWIGHT; where the candle/fire represent life/time and the skull represents death, orginally intended for the OS7 release.

Artist Tom Bunk always supplied a variety of different renditions for for his Color Roughs, be it through art direction or on his own. Below are examples of these various color versions that can be compared to the actual final artwork for cards 293A Explorin' NORMAN and 293B Drillin' DYLAN and cards 309A Heartless HAL and 309B BOWEN Arrow.

The image from the GPK Poster set #18 BUSTED! painted by artist John Pound is used for the OS5 through OS8 retail ad posters with an enlarged, straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. The original poster contains a much smaller Garbage Pail Kids banner. Whereas the OS5 retail poster is yellow, the 'NEW' pink color of the OS6 and OS7 retail posters has stayed the same for the OS8 retail poster, but now contains a huge white box; basically a lazy move of covering up the OS7 information.

The poster image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! from the GIANT GPK card set with the original curved Garbage Pail Kids header rather than the straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. In both the posters and card, along with various award and license card backs, there are several OS1 and OS2 characters found throughout the image.

In 1987, after the release of the OS8 GPK set, CBS Inc. was ready to premier the Garbage Pail Kids Cartoon on Saturday morning. Cartoon cells were created by Geof Darrow for the main cast of characters — although there were tons of extras; the cartoon cells were later auctioned off on eBay. The 13 episodes of the Paramount GPK cartoon were released on DVD for the first time in April of 2006; the episodes are broken down into two main segments, a Loony Toons-type section and a Scooby-Doo detective like section — with the main GPK cast with their regular and hidden identities, along with various breaks such as a 'GPK Award' and 'Would We Lie To You?' breaks. The main cartoon cast is comprised of the following characters: OS2 cards 81a Split KIT and 81b Mixed-Up MITCH, OS2 cards 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, OS6 cards 213a OTTO Whack and 213b ELLIOT Mess, OS5 cards 169a DEE Faced and 169b TERRI Cloth — with OS6 cards 235a Ugly HANS and 235b JAN Hand attached and OS2 59a Clogged DUANE and 59b Bye Bye BOBBIE.

Characters with their regular and hidden-identity images:

Additional characters during the various opening sequences:

Cast of faculty characters: Preston Purgation, Sylvia Censor, Squeaky Clean + Simon Scour:

There were also GPK sculpted Figurines modeled after the cartoon characters that Galoob Toys intended to release. The figurines contained the main GPK Cartoon cast plus various other characters used during the opening sequence, et cetera: OS2 cards 63a Spacey STACY and 63b Planet Janet, OS4 cards 129a Second Hand ROSE and 129b Trashed TRACY, OS5 cards 203a Toothie RUTHIE and 203b Dental FLOSSIE, OS2 cards 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, OS4 cards 138a Alien IAN and 138b Outerspace CHASE, OS6 cards 233a WES Mess and 233b Trash-Can KEN and OS3 cards 113a ALICE Island and 113b Liberty LIBBY. However, after the cartoon was shelved in part due to the American Family Association's ('AFA') efforts against CBS to stop the GPK Cartoon by Topps, the toy figures were also shelved and not released. The AFA Letter and the protest against CBS and its sponsers can be located below, supplied by collector Travis Tierno.

'CLICK' Image to View the Complete AFA Letter Campaign:

Large GPK Flowcharts were created for the releases after the OS4 set which showed the Mark Newgarden, the GPK editor at the time, how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The OS8 contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: Mickey Mouse (OS16), elephant nose / sneezing, out of waffle iron (OS8), fortune cookie (OS13), piñata (TCT), head as cereal bowl - all brain cereal (OS9), fireman - flames (OS9), garbage out of shower (OS8), oil slick, hand puppet (OS8), staples, haunted tree, porcupine (TCT), Samurai, justice with scales, split like log with axe, GPK kangaroo shooting mother (unpublished for OS), iron maiden, cigar (OS8), bloody nose - drawing in blood, punch bag - long neck (OS8), nuclear fart (worked into OS7), teeth for eyes (OS12 - but removed from picture), in dungeon (unpublished).
