Garbage Pail Kids Original Series 1 Chrome

RELEASE DATE : AUGUST 2013

The Chrome Series 1 GPK set was released in the summer of 2013 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in August — only five months after the BNS2 set released in March of 2013. The set mainly consists of a reprint of the 1985 Original Series 1 GPK (OS1) artwork by veteran artist John Pound combined with chromium card technology; no stickers or die-cuts in the set. The set also contains Lost artwork pieces previously found in the Flashback sets by various artists. No new artwork or next-generation GPK artists can be found within this release. The art director for the set is Colin Walton and the brand manager at Topps for the GPK product, among other entertainment brands, is Stephen Dumas.

Each pack, with a suggested retail price of $2.99, contains four cards on heavy card stock — three base card singles and a chance to come across a base card parallel: a Refractor card (1:3 pack ratio), a Prism Refractor card (1:50), a SuperFractor card (1:9,967; 1 of 1), a Gold Refractor card; 50 per subject (1:74; Hobby box exclusive), a X-Fractor card (4:1; Retail value box exclusive), an Atomic Refractor card (4:1; Retail value pack exclusive), a Printing Plate (1:2,490), a GPK Redemption card (1:21,900), a Chrome Concept Sketch card (1:3), a Chrome Concept Sketch Printing Plate (1:3,340), and an Artist Autograph Base Parallel card (1:498). There were also extremely rare C-name cards with no odds given, but reported as 1:24, and no parallels for these chase cards.

'CLICK' IMAGE TO VIEW TIGHT PENCIL PAGE

— The twenty rare C-Name Cards, which first appeared in the BNS2 GPK set, were produced as 'short prints' — often found in sport card releases by Topps and some entertainment products. These inserts are, in general, unannounced, having no pack odds, do not have a published quantity and meant as a surprise for collectors to find; this release the odds are 1:24 packs. Unlike the BNS2 GPK set where the B-name were the new nomenclature and where the C-name cards were the old B-name cards, the C-name cards for OS1 Chrome have the new nomenclature.

— Both veteran GPK artists, John Pound and Tom Bunk, contributed Autograph Artist Cards for the Chrome OS1 set. Pound's artwork found on the card fronts and Bunk's artwork located on the reverse card backs.

— No Puzzles in this release, much like the OS1 Garbage Pail Kids set.

— Out of the fifteen Lost Cards released for the FB1 thr FB3 sets, fourteen appear within the OS1 Chrome set. The only Lost GPK that does not appear are the FB2 70a Idol IRA and 70b KEN Tiki cards. Note: the white-border, specialty-store, 'error' card image pictured.

— Although the OS1 Chrome Set is a replica of the OS1 1985 set release, it is not identical. The base set contains 82 cards rather than 88; the three variation cards do not appear in this release resulting in only one set of checklist cards. The GPK headers are also banner-style rather than the older curved-style. Cards 12a and 12b still faithfully have the pink GPK header; and cards 18a and 18b still faithfully have the red and yellow GPK header.

— The set contains an Incorrect Name; card 41b Joltin' JOEL should be named 'Joltin' JOE' like the Original Series nomenclature; this name is more reminiscent of OS2 character name 'Jolted JOEL'.

— The original release for the OS1 card 9a Boozin' BRUCE and 9b Drunk KEN had the artwork mistakingly reversed; the baby bottle reads 'LO TOR TUG. The image has been faithfully restored to its original position for this release, where the baby bottle now correctly reads OL' ROT GUT. The first correction of this can be found within the Abrams GPK book released in 2012.

— Only twenty OS1 characters were picked for C-Names for the set; all different than the C-Names picked for the BNS2 re-imagined OS1 characters.

— The Forename 'Pete' can be found three times within the Lost GPK subset; card L1a Pickled PETE, card L3a Prickly PETE, and card L12b PETER Meter.

— Another sports card first for the GPK franchise, Chrome Technology; the first GPK release containing no stickers on cards, and therefor, no die-cuts.

ANNOTATED NAMES
EXPLANATORY NOTATIONS & NOMENCLATURE DEFINITIONS

— Several of John Pound unpublished sketches and finished artwork intended for the OS1 set would have been a nice inclusion as a subset idea, even as Tribute Artwork, with an artist's interpretated artwork for the front and the sketch on the backside — although, these type of releases tend not to have any new artwork and are pure money-makers for Topps. John Pound's original 'Samurai Kid' sketch is pictured along with Brent Engstrom's tight pencil sketch and final artwork. The suggested nomenclature per Pound's reference notes were BILLY Boo-Boo, SAMMY Samurai, HARRY Kari—with "Hara-kiri" being a ritual suicide by disembowelment practiced by the Japanese samurai or formerly decreed by a court in lieu of the death penalty, and SAMMY Suicide. The character was presented next to the OS1 characters Unstitched MITCH and Damaged DON as an alternative, whose character was also 'spilling their guts'. Topps went with the cotton stuffing concept rather than with the intestines.

— The Lost Card for L2b Missing LINC was also named Missing LINC for the OS3 and OS5 unpublished pieces back in 1986, see the OS3 and OS5 pages; however, the name was updated and changed to LINCOLN Park for the 2010 FB1 Lost card release.

— An Abrams 16-month GPK Wall Calendar for 2014 was released in August of 2013 along with four new LOST GPK bonus cards; more information can be located within the Abrams GPK book and calendar pages within the OS section.

— As seen on artists John Pound's Tight Pencil artwork for 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, the oringal concept had President Ronald Reagan pushing the red button. And, the original concept for cards 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD had the character stuffing a Raggedy Ann doll into the meat grinder.

— A Target Coupon was dispensed during checkout process that stated: Yes! GPK 1985 Original series: Chrome — $1.50 off With purchase of two Garbage Pail Kids Chrome.

— Two GPK Veterans are back for the Chrome set, artists John Pound and Tom Bunk. Pound, who completed the artwork fronts for the OS1 set, and Bunk, who completed the artwork backs for the OS1 set. Both contribute Artist Autograph cards for the release.
