RELEASE
PERIOD : MID-LATE 1986 PRODUCT #468 : #4 ENTERTAINMENT + #68 PROJECT In mid- to late 1986, Topps re-released the OS1 Garbage Pail Kids characters as a giant sticker set, the second GIANT GPK set release, with the tagline YOU ASKED FOR IT! YOU GOT IT!, measured slightly smaller than 5 X 7 inches that were packaged three cards per pack, following the success of the first Giant Series sticker release that had 'ALL NEW!' artwork. Each pack cost 99¢ and came without twin cards, containing only the A-name cards, and with a checklist printed on the backside of the wrapper. There are two print runs of the Giant 1st Series where #8 ADAM Bomb can be found with two different card backs. Additional sets were requested by upper management during the regular GPK releases to capitalize on the successful sales of the cards during the hype of the parody card craze; including the previous Giant Series and GPK Poster sets. I also have a hunch Topps was attempting to publish these older images, as much as possible, in small/mini, international sizes, and this much larger size, while the lawsuit was underway. The only two sets of twin cards in the original series not included in the Giant
1st Series set are cards: 9a/b Boozin BRUCE & 9b Drunk KEN and
17a Wacky JACKIE & 17b Loony LENNY. OS1 card 40a Unstitched MITCH replaced
card 9a Boozin' BRUCE, and OS1 card 41a Mean GENE replaced card 17a Wacky JACKIE
in the card line-up, leaving the set at 39 cards. Only the A-Names are used within the release; no twin cards and/or B-names. Character #8 ADAM Bomb can be found with two different card backs found in two different print runs. Either the 'Most Unpopular Student Award' or the 'Most Unlikely To Succeed Award' can be located. The concept for the OS1 card backs came from the 1960's Nutty Postcards and Kooky Awards card sets and the artwork re-worked by artist Tom Bunk. The Ribbon Artwork on the backside of the card with number was created and drawn by Mark Newgarden. A Production Error can be found on the front side of card #29 Bony JOANIE; a large 'splat' or glob of red color is located under the left ponytail to the right side of the card. Character #30 New Wave DAVE can be found with its original card back titled 'Dirty Rat Award' or with the Giant Series card back for #11 'Living Death Certificate' caused by a production error. The Checklist mis-spells card #17 as 'Mean JEAN' instead of Mean GENE and card #32 as 'Frigid BRIDGIT' instead of Frigid BRIDGET. The Giant 1st Series Reverse Card Backs are NOT in the same order as the original 1st Series card backs, only card #1 has the same back for both sets. The Checklist is printed on the wrapper and not located on any card back. |
The Topps Chewing Gum (T.C.G.) company released the Nutty
Awards Postcards in 1964 which were completed by Jack Davies. In 1985,
the Topps company rendered almost every idea from this set for the 1st Series
Garbage Pail Kids card backs, 20 years later. Artist Tom Bunk reworked and created
new art for the backsides and drew the spiral border while Mark Newgarden rendered
the writing as well as creating new material including the ribbon artwork in the
bottom right hand corner. Out of the 32 Nutty Awards card set, 31 of these concepts
were used in the GPK release. Only four of the original names were changed (ex:
Idiot Award to Zero Award) and the paragraphs and signiatures are the same, albeit,
in a different style. The Nutty Awards title #12 not used: Dishonorable Discharge. The
nine new OS1 concepts: Allergy Prescription, Bad Taste Award, Big Stink Award,
Grouch License,Clumsy Award, Foulmouth Award, Reform School Diploma, Whiners Award,
Garbage Pail Award, and Busy Body License. The Ribbon Artwork character on the backside of the card was created and drawn by Mark Newgarden. In 1967, the Topps Chewing Gum company published the 44 card Kooky Awards Stickers set painted by Norman Saunders and five completed by Tom Sutton; several ideas were recycled from the 1964 Nutty Awards Postcards set which in turn were used on the majority of the card backs for the 1985 Garbage Pail Kids set. The following example for the Bull Throwers Award which can be found in all three sets used the same tagline at the end "Cows may come and cows may go but your bull goes on forever!" The Original Artwork for cards 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD had the infamous red and blue Raggedy Ann doll being stuffed in the meat grinder; it was changed to a red and blue book for the final artwork and actual release. |
