RELEASE
DATE : FEBRUARY 2010 SET CODE : TOGPKFB The GPK Flashback Series 1 set, aka FBS1, was released in early 2010 by the Topps company, Inc. and shipped in the month of February, two years after the All-New Series 7 release and a year after its original release date of January 2009. The base set is comprised of 70 nostalgic pieces by veteran GPK artists John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola and Mae Jeon including a 'Lost' subset that consists of three unpublished OS1 images, and three older Pound artwork pieces, for a total of 160 base set cards, with twin names. The release was rounded out by the 'Where Are They Now' subset, portraying classic GPK as they would appear today, executed by the next-gen artists which included Brent Engstrom, Luis Diaz, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko and Neil Camera. The set is art directed by Jeff Zapata and supervising editor John Williams with work done by Colin Walton. A total of two main production runs were released during a continued interest of old 80's nostalgic toys and hobbies during this period which included product for both hobby and retail stores. Each pack, with a suggested retail price of $1.99, contains 10 sticker cards on 14 card stock and a chance to come across a Motion (Loco or Lenticular) card (1:8 packs), an original Printing Plate card (1:1,790 packs; 1:50 boxes), an artist Sketch card (1:229 packs; 1:10 boxes) and four levels of parallels; Gross Green border (inserted 1:2 packs), Punk Pink border (insterted 1:3 packs), Silver border (insterted 1:6) and Gold border (1:42). The set also contains 4 bonus cards that can be found in either a Bonus box or Blister pack that were located at different retail chains. ARTISTS : JOHN POUND, TOM BUNK, , JAMES WARHOLA, DAVID BURKE, MAE JEON, HOWARD CRUSE, BRENT ENGSTROM, LUIS DIAZ, MARK PINGITORE, JOE SIMKO, NEIL CAMERA WRITERS : JEFF ZAPATA, JOHN WILLIAMS, COLIN WALTON, ETC. 160 CARD SET : 160 BASE CARDS 825 TOTAL CHASE CARDS = 160 BASE (w/ LOST & WATN?) + 160 GREEN + 160 PINK + 160 SILVER + 160 GOLD + 10 LOCO MOTION + 10 SKETCH (10 DIF'T ARTISTS) + 4 BONUS + 1 PLATE Where ANS4 captured the 20th Anniversary, Flashback Series 1 captures the 25th Anniverseary of the GPK brand name. Minus the small amount of new artwork material for the release, the 'Flashback' sets are money-saving releases for Topps considering the majority of the freelance artwork was already paid for in the past, and the iconic characters previously showcased within the franchise helps promote. The customer demand plays upon the nostalgic state of the brand during the second half of the '80s, the success of the two Wacky Packages Flashback releases in 2008 and 2009, and the resurgence of popular '80s brands and products during this period. Costs were additionally cut by reducing the number of boxes and wrappers manufactured and embracing the online and digital word. * GPK ANNOUNCEMENT Relive the days of arcade games, boom boxes and Rubik's cubes. GARBAGE PAIL KIDS FLASHBACK takes you back to the radical '80s with this retro-cool series of stickers. Back in 1985, Garbage Pail Kids made collectible history - igniting a phenomenon that continues to this day. Topps now returns to its vaults to pay homage to the stickers that started it all. Wacky Pack Flashback rocked the card-collecting world last year with its powerful mix of vintage art and rare inserts, and this series takes that successful formula and applies it to the Garbage Pail Kids! Each sticker in GARBAGE PAIL KIDS FLASHBACK features classic art, including characters that are now indelibly etched into pop culture such as Mixed-Up Mitch, Up Chuck, Dead Ted and Adam Bomb. Out of public view for over 20 years, these collector faves are now being released for the first time for a whole new generation. Plus, a special subset unearths 9 never-before-published "Lost GPKs." Another subset, "Where Are They Now" features brand-new art of classic GPKs as they would appear today. And the gross fun doesn't end there - check out these multiple levels of collectible inserts: Sketch Cards: 1/1 original hand drawings by the GPK artists. These were a huge hit when done for All-New Series 4, and are brought back for the first time here! (Odds TBD) 1/1 Original Printing Plates: The actual metal plates used to print each Garbage Pail Kids Flashback sticker will be inserted into packs. These are one-of-a-kind collectibles featuring 4 unique plates per subject - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. (Odds TBD) Multiple Levels of Rare Parallels - Gross Green, Punk Pink, Silver and Gold: The border color, along with the logo and nameplate, changes on these rare variations of the base set. Add to the mix the characters' B-name variation and you have multiple levels for maximum collectability. Approximately only 85 sets of the Gold parallels will be produced! This helped fuel the feverish collecting craze of Wacky Pack Flashback! (Green 1:4, Pink 1:6, Silver 1:12, Gold TBD) Loco Motion Cards: These 10 lenticular cards animate the Garbage Pail Kids for a maximum gross effect that no static card could achieve! (1:8 packs) Series after series, Garbage Pail Kids delivers consistently high year-round sales. Earlier releases continue to sell side by side with newer series. All of this adds up to the simple fact that Garbage Pail Kids is a true evergreen brand that appeals to kids of all ages.If you love the '80s, you'll love GARBAGE PAIL KIDS FLASHBACK. |

The GPK Flashback set consists of eight different
images from each series, OS1 through OS8, plus four images from the OS10 set for
the Bonus cards. The Loco Motion chase card set contains animated images for characters
from the OS1, OS2, OS4, OS7 and OS8 sets. The set also features four levels of Parallels chase cards to collect that mirrors the yellow checkerboard borders of the 160 base card set. These chase card parallel sets can be found in either a Green Gross border inserted 1 out of every 2 packs, a Punk Pink border inserted 1:3 packs, a Silver border card inserted 1 out of every 6 packs or a Gold border set inserted 1:42 packs. For each different parallel card the color of the border, logo background and nameplate are always the same. Caveat, this example has been scanned and edited; the actual printed card is much darker. The Where Are They Now? subset puts several original GPK characters into nowaday scenarios, twenty-five years later, as young adults. This is the only new artwork created for the Flashback, throwback set with artwork created by Tom Bunk, Brent Engstrom, Luis Diaz, Mark Pingitore and Joe Simko. The card set has the original character card images on the backside; although both card backs only have the 'A' twin name, no 'B' name and a new banner is placed on the mock-up image. For cards 75a Cranky FRANKIE & 75b Bad BRAD the back of the cards are misspelled 'Cranky FRANKY'. Card 42a JOEL Hole (Joel HOLE) is found with the Nomenclature with the Name 'Joel' small and not bolded and the word 'HOLE' as big and bolded; both the opposite of what they should be. The checklist card comes with a list of errors as well; card 11b FRAN FRAN has both first names in bold whereas the checklist has only the second 'Fran' name in bold, 33b JORDAN Nuts has the word 'nuts' in bold instead of the first name on the checklist and card 39a Fluoride FLOYD has the name mispelled as 'Flouride FLOYD' on the checklist card. The promotional material and GPK Flashback Packaging was manufactured in 2009, the set was released in late February (hobby) and in early March (retail) of 2010, hence, the copyright date found on certain card backs is 2010. Topps manufactured brick-red, generic Gravity Feed boxes for all of their ongoing releases, placing a solid sticker on the front of the box for the relative theme. Pictured below is the preliminary mock-up image of ADAM Bomb before the checkboard border was decided on; this character was found within all of the promotional material. Two WATN? final artwork pieces based off of artist Mark Pingitore's concept sketches have several Nostalgic 80's Toys shout-outs found within the final artwork. Among other items, artist Brent Engstrom's final artwork for cards #74 contains the Atari console and two controllers, a GPK Movie VCR tape, a Rubix Cube, a Gizmo Doll, a He-Man toy (with sword), a Simon Says game and a My Pet Monster (arm). Luis Diaz's final artwork for cards #78 has the first Nintendo console and a NES controller, a Speak & Spell game and also a He-Man sword a popular image that can also be found in the ANS7 cards #44. Due to the Where Are They Now? subset, there are several cards with the exact Same Names; Cards 1a and 71a Nasty NICK & cards 1b and 71b Evil EDDIE, cards 3a and 72a ADAM Bomb & cards 3b and 72b Blasted BILLY, cards 4a and 74a Tee-Vee STEVIE & cards 4b and 74b Geeky GARY, cards 7a and 76a Bony JOANIE & card 7a and 76b Thin LYNN, cards 16a and 77a Split KIT & cards 16b and 77b Mixed-Up MITCH, cards 18a and 78a Hot Head HARVEY & cards 18b and 78b ROY Bot and cards 34a and 80a NAT Nerd & cards 34b and 80b CLARK Can't. The ten different artists who completed sketch cards were given 10 blank Sketch Card called 'Returns' from the Topps company; once drawn and approved, they could be kept by the artist or sold outright or auctioned to collectors. These sketch cards are often more highly detailed than the ones located and distributed within the hobby and retail boxes. Below is an example of one of Fred Wheaton's sketch card returns. Two WATN? final artwork pieces based off of Mark Pingitore's concept sketches have several GPK character and acronym Shout-Outs found within the final artwork images which can be seen on the 'Artwork Gallery'. Tom Bunk's final artwork for #75a has 'Rappin' RON Was Here!' scrawled on the upper left hand wall and two pictures portray the portraits of Snooty SAM and Gorgeous GEORGE. Pingitore's original concept piece had the Bill of Rights being shredded, whereas Bunk's work has not only the U.S. flag but also the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, We The People and a U.S. bill. Bunk changed the 'In U.$. We Trust' concept to 'In $ We Trust'. Joe Simko's final artwork for #77, like Pingitore's concept, has the #9 GPK Poster image of Broad MAUD pin-up poster on the jail wall as well as two WANTED pictures of SANDY Clod and Deadly DUDLEY. The GPK acronym can be found on the police badge and the GPK PD wall plaque. The nineteenth series to contain cards with GPK Acronyms found within the artwork. The GPK acronym can be found on the superhero shirt of cards 34a NAT Nerd & 34b CLARK Can't, on the hat of cards 51a Cut-Up CARMEN & 51b Dotted LIONEL, on the video recorder 'REHAB' (covered by the name plate) of cards 73a Boozin' BRUCE & 73b Drunk KEN, on the 'PD' sign, on the police badge and on the knuckles of cards 77a Split KIT & 77b Mixed-Up MITCH and on the license plate (GPK13) of cards 79a Babbling BROOKE and 79b Jelly KELLY. The Flashback reverse card backs are reprinted images of the 1986 Giant Stickers set, front and backs; cards #1 through #12 (front), but no card back images for cards #9 and #12 ... the remaining cards, #12 (back) through #15 are within the Flashback 3 set. This saved Topps money from having to come up with anything original for the backs, but also pays tribute to the flashback theme. The original 5x7-sized images can now be found on reduced 3x5-sized card stock. See the Giant Stickers page within the GPK~Land section within this website for more information on the artwork itself. The images for the fifteen Giant Sticker set can also be found on Mini Giant Cards released within retail jumbo packs for the 2015 Series 2 '30th Anniversary' GPK set. Two WATN? final artwork images based off of Mark Pingitore's concept sketches have a Self-Portrait by the final artwork artist which both can be viewed within the 'Artwork Gallery'. Tom Bunk's final artwork for #79 has a caricature of Bunk himself in the second story window, white goatee and all. A shout-out to the GPK acronym shows up on the license plate as 'GPK13' (bad luck?) changed from 'GPK1' on Bunk's color rough; Pingitore's original concept piece had far less background artwork. Brent Engstrom's final artwork for #74 also has a self-portrait of the artist himself found on the newspaper located behind the Tee-Vee STEVIE character; the painting to the right is actually a painted portrait of Engstrom's ex-wife Tracy. Because of the mash-up of several different series releases, there are ten sets of cards with the Same Forenames; 19a DINAH Saur & 32b Dyin' DINAH, 10b RAY Gun & 36b Sting RAY, 11b FRAN FRAN & 37a FRAN Furter, 23b Peepin' TOM & 42b Teed-Off TOM, 8a New Wave DAVE & 53a Have A Nice DAVE, 29a MAX Axe & 55b MAX Stacks, 50b Bull's IRA & 62a Waffle IRA, 11a Double HEATHER & 63a Leather HEATHER, 61b Sparrin' WARREN & 67a Global WARREN, 60b Inter STELLA & 68a Stitched STELLA, 16b Mixed-Up MITCH & B1 Itchy MITCH, and 49a Milky WAYNE & B3 Varicose WAYNE. Two WATN? Final Artwork characters share the spotlight with other retro GPK personalities found within the final artwork images. Luis Diaz's final arwork for cards #72 derived from Mark Pingitore's concept piece includes the OS15 images for cards 620a ADA Bomb & 620b Blasted BETTY; Diaz added a cat to the family. Diaz's initial colour rough for cards for cards 72a ADAM Bomb & 72b Blasted BILLY had more of a OS15 620a ADA Bomb & 620b Blasted BETTY color scheme, but was replaced by the OS1 8a ADAM Bomb & 8b Blasted BILLY color scheme as seen in the color rough and final artwork. Brent Engstrom's final artwork for cards #73 from his own concept (with the 'rehab' based off of Jeff Zapata's idea) has the OS2 images for cards 47a Disgustin' JUSTIN & 47b Vile KYLE. The Sketch chase card artwork for the release was drawn by Jay Lynch, Tom Bunk, Brent Engstrom, Dave Gross, Layron DeJarnette, Fred Wheaton, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, Colin Walton and Jeff Zapata. The sketches can be pulled from either Retail or Hobby boxes with the 1:10 ratio, one out of every 10 boxes (1:229 packs). The other hard-to-find chase 'card' found within the set is the very elusive Printing Plate that is found with a ratio of 1:50, one out of every 50 boxes (1:1,790 packs) the plates can be found in either Black, Cyan, Magenta or Yellow based off of the four colors that create the images during the printing process. Building up to, and during the release of, the Flashback set Topps had a 'Shipping In February' online Ad Banner promoting the upcoming and new Garbage Pail Kids set. The same box image is located on the promotional brochure showcasing two early mock-up images with a solid yellow border instead of the checker board-like card border. The Topps company registered the trademark () name of Garbage Pail Gang on February 10, 2010 (serial number 77932532); within that same year Topps released the brand Collect-a-Bands (made by Dizzy Nights Entertainment) in August of 2010. The 'goods and services' description stated: "soft squeezable balls; beach balls; plastic vinyl play balls; soft flying disks; squeeze toys; ornaments for Christmas trees; bubble making wands and solution sets; dolls and magnetic doll sets consisting of flat magnetic dolls with flat magnetic articles of clothing and accessories; toy candy dispensers; arcade games; card games; trading card games; board games; plastic toy scale model kits; costume masks; toy figurines, poseable toy figurines, toy action figures and accessories therefor; toy vehicles; amusement park rides; pinball games; arcade-type electronic video games". Although various items were released at a later date licensed through other companies, not other Garbage Pail Gang items were released and the trademark was abandonded in 2014. A set of Garbage Pail Kids Erasers, muchlike the popular Wacky Packages Eraser (two sets released in 2011) was a planned project but unfortunately cancelled in 2011. The Garbage Pail Gang word mark never became a registered trademark. The set contains Two Separate Checklists, one specifically for the 'A' cards and another for the 'B' cards. As with ANS6 and ANS7, this is the third release that has a checklist outlined by the color blue. The other blue phenomenon is that the GPK logo is always blue in the set; there is no red GPK card logo on the base card fronts. |

The Original Series
GPK have not been in print within the U.S. in their original form since 1989.
Under the OAA/Topps lawsuit guidelines in 1987, no new GPK images could be created
post settlement with CPK likeness, therefore any pre-settlement image (released
or unreleased) can be publishedthe time must have been right to dip back
into the nostalgic popularity of the classic 80's GPK images. The set mainly focuses
on the pre-settlement characters, whereas the post-settlement reimagined characters
have been left out of this reiteration, except for the bonus cards with OS10 characters. The Lost GPK artwork for cards 65a Pickled PETE & 65b Formaldehyde FRED, created by artist John Pound in 1986, was originally intended for the original OS2 GPK set. The same concept, created by John Pound in 1998, can be found within the Meanie Babies parody set as card #6 PICKLES. The original Set Concept in 2008 showcased the base cards with a solid yellow border and an updated GPK logo (that fit over the old logo) within the early 2009 promotional material that showed the Lost GPK having the nostalgic white borders and original GPK logowhich would have coincided with the Wacky Package Flashback Lost Wacky's. This was all planned by the then sole art director Colin Walton before the release was shelved. Once the Flashback set was unshelved, in late 2009, and released in early 2010, Jeff Zapata took over the art direction and the checkerboard was added to the base cards as well as the mirrored parallel setsthe Lost GPK, with a short period of having a plain yellow border updated from the white border, also adopted the checkerboard effect. The Where Are They Now? subset was brought into the base set and doubled in size with added twin cards and the classic GPK base set was truncated while still keeping the 80 card set size plus twins. The Next-Gen GPK artist newcomer Joe Simko contributed 2 final artwork pieces for the GPK Flashback set from a Mark Pingitore concept and from one of his own concepts which both can be seen within the 'Artwork Gallery' page. Below is the original concept sketch for cards #80 from the Where Are They Now? base card subset created by Simko before starting on the second concept and final artwork. Later, the character sits below a Microsoft parody sign; notice both of Simko's contributions have the Kids with five fingers. The Lost GPK artwork pieces for cards 66a Baby ABIE & 66b LINCOLN Park, along with cards 67a Global WARREN & 67b AL Pocalypse, were both intended for the original OS5 GPK card set; with images for card 66 finding itself on a test sheet before being pulled with the same 'Baby ABIE' name; more information and images within the OS5 section. However, the same image was originally conceived for the OS3 GPK set with the character having only one bullet hole through the top hat; more information and images can be found within the OS3 section. Right before the GPK Flashback set release, the LTL Prints company licensed most of the images from Topps, except for the missing unpublished artwork for the OS16, for sale as wall graphics, computer laptop graphics, et cetera from their website. A give-away contest was held by several of the main GPK websites at the time and LTL Prints provided the free prizes; Diego Gonzalez (aka TCT) created a great graphic for this website for the occasion. The previously unpublished artwork for the Lost GPK cards 68a/b, 69a/b and 70a/b, along with nine other images, were pulled from the original 1989 unreleased OS16 GPK set for the published 2003 ANS1 card set; more information and images found within the OS16 section. The name for 68a Stitched STELLA remained intact, although the card name for 68b Interracial RACHEL was changed to, possibly the more politically correct, Patchwork Paula. ANS GPK Next-Gen Artist Brent Engstrom contributed three final artwork pieces for the GPK Flashback set from a Mark Pingitore concept and from two of his own concepts which all can be seen within the 'Artwork Gallery' section. Below is the original concept sketch for cards #73 from the Where Are They Now? base card subset created by Engstrom before starting on the second concept and final artwork; this plays on the same intoxicated induced animal images found on the original OS1 card image. Veteran GPK Artist Tom Bunk contributed two final artwork pieces for the GPK Flashback set from Mark Pingitore's concept work. Below are the color roughs and tight rough sketches for cards #75 and #79 from the Where Are They Now? base card subset created by Bunk before starting on the final artwork. Notice that both final artwork pieces have Kids with five fingers for both sets of roughs. The Lost GPK subset that was previously numbered 75a/b thru 80a/b on the outdated checklist were re-numbered 65a/b thru 70a/b, whereas the original 10 card Where Are They Now? subset with 10 added twin cards became a 20 card subset numbering 71a/b thru 80a/b on the updated checklist. The card backs for cards 16a/b contain the #8 'Take A GPK To Lunch' character from the Giant GPK 15 card set; this image can also be found on #1 'DRINK All-Natural Garbage Pail Kola - You'll Never Drink Anything Else!' within the GPK Poster set labeled as the 'House Special'. For more background information on the imagery found within this poster, please see the GPK Poster page within the GPK~Land section on this site. ANS GPK concept and now Next-Gen Artist Mark Pingitore contributed his first final artworkpiece for the GPK Flashback set from his own concept for cards #76 which can be seen in the 'Artwork Gallery' section. Below is the original concept sketch for cards #77 from the Where Are They Now? base card subset drawn by Pingitore before starting on the second concept; the later final artwork was completed by Joe Simko. Pingitore's final artwork has the character with the original five fingers, a precursor to the Brand-New Series sets that are modeled after the CPK dolls again. The last chase card set is the Loco Motion cards that Neil Camera started to work on in 2008 and assisted by Colin Walton for one of the Motion cards; Walton had previously worked on the ANS7 GPK Motion cards. The Motion cards for this release have more frames with a much better fluid motion on card; they are inserted with a 1:8 pack ratio. Pictured below are two color rough concept drawings for #8 REUBEN Cube and #10 Squashed JOSH; the later does not seem to have the correct date. Ten pairs of Twin Cards, numbering 65a/b thru 74a/b, were removed from the original November 2009 preliminary checklist (subject to change) that contained eight images from the OS9 set and two images from the OS10 set: Cute TIPPI/Waxy WENDY, Early BERT/Rotten ROBIN, Snot Rope HOPE/Drippy DEBBIE, Con VIC/AL Catraz, CLARK Shark/MANNY Eater, Beasty BOYD/Semi COLIN, Dent AL/Fluoride IDA, Scalped RALPH/Bone-Head FRED, Locked DORIAN/SIDNEY Kidney and Vermin HERMAN/Gullivered TRAVIS. The Lost GPK previously numbered 75a/b thru 80a/b on the outdated checklist. |
