Shinji Ikari is a sweet, timid young boy with no real confidence in himself or his abilities. He is extremely passive and willing to let others walk all over him rather than have to face them.

Since the whole series focuses on him, there's not much point in explaining his history much so will just skip right to the good stuff.

Shinji and Kaworu

When Shinji meets Kaworu he is emotionally shattered. Shinji has faced such things before but this time he has no companions left to turn to. He is completely alone.

"There's no one left to call my friend..."

Enter Kaworu, who's natural happiness and openess intigues Shinji from the very start. More than anything else, Shinji is attracted towards Kaworu because he feels so completely alone. He wants someone, anyone, to trust.

More importantly, he is very troubled and really wants someone to talk to. Very easily he opens up to Kaworu, and starts telling him things without even knowing why himself.

But Kaworu changes Shinji more though death than his life. It is after Shinji kills him that Shinji is launched into the self analysis that eventally leads to the realization the he is not definded by what others think of him, he can be whomever he chooses, reality can be whatever he wants...
