INTERVIEW: TIPPI N. BLEVINS!

Tippi N. Blevins

Tippi N. Blevins knows a thing or two about suspense. There are few things more suspenseful than a well-written bit of Vampire fiction.

That’s another thing Tippi knows a thing or two about.

Blevins is collaborating with Fiona Avery on CURSED, a comic due out this October from Top Cow comics. Upon the suggestion of Fiona, I had a chat with Tippi and below are the results!

GEEK WORLD: What can you tell us about CURSED?

TIPPI N. BLEVINS: It's coming out in October from Top Cow, with art by Romano Molenaar (pencils) and Kevin Conrad (inks), and alternate covers for each issue.

Shan Beaumont is our journalist. She's heard stories all her life about how messed up her family is, and how they've supposedly been cursed by the Egyptian god Osiris. She's never believed that, but there are these gruesome ritual murders in her hometown that give her the push she needs to start digging for the truth.

GW: How did the idea for CURSED come about?

TB: Fiona and I had wanted to do a project together for a long time--it's really like the two of us having a big party and both of us bringing our individual characters to it. So one day in the normal flow of conversation, we discovered we both had vaguely Egyptian ideas and thought they would go well together. It really gathered momentum pretty quickly after that, and over one weekend, we hammered out the basic idea for it.

--

GW: How's the collaborative process with Fiona (Avery) going?

TB: The writing's done, but we had a really good time! Prior to this, I don't think either of us really gave collaboration much of a thought. Or, well... not any good thought. But neither of us came away with permanent wounds or severe hangovers, and we got to bring our characters together. Throw in a margarita kiddie pool and a game of Twister and that's a damn good party, right there.

GW: Any plans for future comic book projects? Perhaps comic adaptations of some of your short stories?

TB: I have several ideas brewing now, as a matter of fact. A couple are based on my stories, and a couple are all-new ideas from the depths of my twisted little brain. Now that I've had a taste of writing comic book scripts, I really like it. When writing my short stories, I've always seen them pretty visually before my mind's eye, either like watching a movie or being invisible in a room and spying on the people inside. Writing the scripts was like the pure distillation of that process. Fiona and I also want to bring two of our other characters together in another project, a snappy high fantasy noir thing, but there's no solid date on that yet.

--

GW: Okay, here's your chance to really sell the book. Give us your best sales pitch for CURSED.

TB: The art is looking great! We have alternative covers by Jim Silke, Chris Bachalo, Joe Benitez... It's a darker story than Top Cow's other current titles. They wanted something darker and edgier. It reworks some Egyptian myths and sheds new light on some old ones. Ever wondered what *really* happened after Cleopatra was stung by the asp? You'll find out in Cursed. I'm really interested in the dark, twisty, secret stuff we all have inside us, and in our pasts lying just beneath the surface. I think that comes out in this story.
