INTERVIEW: MICHAEL AVON OEMING

Michael Avon Oeming

POWERS, HAMMER OF THE GODS, BASTARD SAMURAI. Michael Avon Oeming has an impressive resume. With two of this co-creations, HAMMER OF THE GODS and POWERS both being optioned for film deals, his resume is sure to become even more impressive.

Geek World recently sat down with this talented artist, here are the results!

GEEK WORLD: How did Comic-Con International go for you this year?

Michael Avon Oeming: It was amazing. The show gets bigger every year. There tons-TONS of producers walking around looking for properties. Lots of business opprotunities. I also brought my family with me for the first time. The only bad thing about the show is its so big, its difficult to spend time with your friends at the show or after.

POWERS
GW: How did the idea for POWERS come about? How instrumental were you in it's creation?

MAO: It came through a mutual respect Brian and I have for eachothers work. We met at a small show when I was finishing Foot Soldiers and he was doing AKA GOLDFISH. When I finished my creator owned book, SHIP OF FOOLS, I contacted him wanting to do some crime noir books in a new cartoony style I was trying out.

GW: Of your works so far; POWERS, HAMMER OF THE GODS, BASTARD SAMURAI, etc., which has been the most fulfilling for you?

MAO: I cant say. Powers would have to be the total experience, but it also comes with the heavy price of a monthly schedule, so sometimes its work vs pleasure. Hammer is pure escapism for me, but it hasnt had the success that Powers had. Both have film deals so things are going well for both. I guess Id have to say Powers is slightly more fulfilling than Hammer, but its pretty close.

--

GW:What can you tell us about the progress of HAMMER OF THE GODS film adaptation?

MAO: Compared to how Powers went, this was fairly smooth. My Manager, David Engel shoped it around quite a bit, put a new "pitchable" spin on it and found a great home at New Regencey. We've had meetings with NR and they are great people and are well known for actually producing properties they buy.

HAMMER OF THE GODS
GW: What are you working on right now?

MAO: Powers 35, I just finished Hammer Hits China #3, Dragons on Fire for Inside Kung Fu and some other stuff that has no schedule.

--

GW: Which future project are you most looking forward to?

MAO: Hmm. I have a big martial arts epic I'll be starting in a bit, Id have say right now its something called the CROSS BRONX wich is a crime noir story with a ghost twist.

--

X-MEN ANNUAL #9
GW: What influenced you to get into comic book art and who are your professional influences?

MAO: X Men Annual 9 by Art Adams. Thats when I wanted to draw comics. I was reading and loving them before but that was it. Art Adams changed my life. My influences are pretty wide- the strongest of them are Mignola, Alex Toth and Bruce Timm. Others include Steve Rude, Frazetta, Miller, and Eisner, along with studying animation.

GW: If you had the choice of working alongside any writer in the business today, who would be it? Who's your dream project-partner, in other words?

MAO: Bendis, really. Other than Brian, just stuff I write myself working with friends.

--

GW: Okay, here's your free advertising space. Your chance to sell your next project or the project you're currently on. Sell me on your comic!

MAO: My next project is called NEVERMORE with Chris Golden. Its a kids Saturday morning cartoon really. Protoge's of Poe become immortal and are a traveling rock band who fights evil with their POE POWERS! There you go :)

GW: And finally, a random quote or piece of advice to end this with?

MAO: "Beggers cant be choosers"!

Author of this piece, Rob K, claims to have powers. The "power" of eating bean and cheese burritos faster than a speeding hispanic! And the "power" of taking many long naps in a single afternoon! Go, Rob. Go.
