TOOWONG CEMETERY

Toowong Cemetery is one of the most beautiful haunted places in Brisbane. Comprising an area of 257 acres at the base of One Tree Hill (the European name for Mount Coot-tha which dominates the Brisbane skyline), the cemetery is a celebration of the Victorian Age and the prevailing attitudes to death and the afterlife. It is by far the largest cemetery in South East Queensland, the final resting place of 115, 000 people. Much of the cemetery is overgrown with ferns and vines. Ancient hoop pines rise up towards the sky from dark groves. Broken gravestones and leaning memorials dot the landscape. Many plots have collapsed and others are in imminant danger of subsiding. There are many parts where you would not care to go alone ... ghost stories of the cemetery abound; Statues that are said to move, sightings of black hooded figures carrying candles, and mists that rise up out of tombs. If you are interested in visiting this truly eerie cemetery, Ghost Tours offer a guided Ghost Bus Tour - TOUR#2 through it after dark if you dare ...
