Lord Mayo,
as Viceroy of India was assassinated when he was on a tour of the prisons
on the Andaman Islands, by a convict sentenced to life imprisonment. What
legal reform came out of this?
The answer:
The sentence of 'Life Imprisonment' was reduced from the existing period of 'the convict's entire lifetime' to 14 years.The assassin said he had no qualms in doing what he did since , being a lifer, he had nothing to look forward to anyway.
