Married to Julie, two kids, one of them is a son, Sam.
Dave is an experienced diver, conscientious, careful and cool in crises. He's the kind of guy who has seen everything and done everything. He has a quiet sense of humour, and is always serving dry as dust comments to his working mates.
He never talks about his thoughts and feelings. Like the other Water Police divers, he's not one for sharing his emotions with anyone.

The character Dave McCall is absent in the fifth series, the viewers do not get to know why he suddenly disappears. In episode 164 - "True Blue", in the sixth and last series of Water Rats, his former collegues at the Water Police learn that he is dead of an heart attack. They attend a wake for him at the Cutter Bar.
