Week 4 - Creating Art with Text

Assignment 1: Text Variations

text variation

We learned how to manipulate text by changing the tracking, kerning, leading, scaling, baseline shift, etc.

Assignment 2: Text on a Path

text on path

We had to use the (shudder) vector pen and shape tools to set the paths for the text. To my extreme surprise, the vector pen easily did exactly what I wanted, where I wanted it. I guess my threats and curses finally whipped it into shape. (grin) I had done a text filled with text, but PS crashed and I lost it. I didn't bother to recreated it.

Yep, Janee, this vector stuff is easy. (Nelia ducking and running for cover)

Assignment 3: Warped Text

I had lots of fun playing around with these.

Assignment 4: Special Text Effects

effects

This was supposed to end up looking like an old fashioned pattern filled text postcard. I ended up veering off from the lesson on this. I got different black and white animal line art for my fills. I used a different animal on each letter -Ocelot, butterfly, fish, and birds. I think the "G" looks sort of like the croquet mallet in Alice in Wonderland. Then I got the idea to fill the lines with a gradient. This took a bit of doing, but I love the way it turned out. I added a style to make 3D lettering. I decided not to put a photo or image as the background, because I thought it would take the focus away from the gorgeous letters.

Assignment 5: Carved Plaque

carved

It's easy to turn a 3D beveled object into a carved one - you just change the direction of the bevel. However, like all carved effects I've done, I never can tell if it looks carved in or looks like it's sitting on top. The more I look at it, the harder it is to tell. Sort of like those graphics, where you either see two faces or a vase. I can see it flip back and forth.

Since the shadowing on this is reversed, it should look carved to you. If it doesn't, then I intended this to look like I added a pop out on top. Really!!

Gold Text

carved

This was a fairly complex method. I had to go back a couple of times, when I discovered I'd skipped a step. It was well worth the effort, as this effect is awesome. I wasn't successful in making this into a style. I realize it's because of the way it's made, but I sure would like to have a shortcut to reproducing it.
