Londo is Machiavellian and burdened with duty. As he commented to G'Kar, he never really had a childhood; since he was young, he has always been weighted with his position in Centauri society. From the very first episode of the series, when he mentions that he foresees his death twenty years down the line at the hands of G'Kar, his future seems less than ideal. He is destined to spiral downwards throughout the series, and his fatal flaw is his imbalance: he concentrates on what he wants while ignoring who he is.

Londo is a study of wrong choices and regrets. While he would be content to relax and enjoy life with wine and women, he must handle affairs of the state--and he always seems to make the wrong choices in his effort to stay on top. At his worst, he is positively tyrannical as he fights to keep his world on top. In other situations, he is reluctant to act when he feels that action will hinder future gains. He does everything for the sake of his world, but in doing so, he damns not only his world but his chances for a happy life. Ultimately, having brought up and brought down a lunatic from the throne and hurt his world and his chances for redemption through actions that he thought would help, he finally takes to the last chance that Lady Morella predicted he would have: succumbing to his greatest fear, knowing it will destroy him.

His relationship with G'Kar is particularly important to the series. It seems too big too get into here, so I may eventually make a Londo and G'Kar page...

shilpa's comments: Londo is easily the most tragic figure in the series. You can't help but see his noble intentions as he attempts to help his world, but he's so wrapped up in acheiving greatness that he plays it safe, trying to avoid trouble--or makes foolish bargains that lead to more regrets...ultimately, though, he makes a noble choice, becoming a Keeper-possessed emporer and playing along with the Drakh until he places his world's last hope upon Sheridan and Delenn and asks G'Kar to kill him... I find it very hard not to pity him. His relationship with G'Kar is priceless as they evolve from mortal enemies to good friends.

p's comments: Londo kicks arse, gosh darnit. He has some of the best lines in the series. One day I'll make a random-Londo-quote generator. No one else says "G'Kar!" with so much zest. That's all there is to it.
