Profasi

Origin and action.

Profasi is a purified injectable preparation of a natural hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) and is derived from pregnant women's urine. The biological action of Profasi is almost identical to that of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) which is released by the pituitary and responsible for the final maturation and release of the egg in a natural cycle. Profasi may also be given in smaller doses after embryo transfer to maintain hormone levels and the lining of the uterus.

Dosage and administration

Profasi is given 35-37 hours before the planned ovum pick-up. The timing is calculated to give the eggs time to mature but to avoid the danger of ovulation before the pick-up. The usual dosage is 5,000 or 10,000 units prior to egg collection. After the embryo transfer there are two injections of 2,000 units on specified days.

Profasi comes in powder form and needs to be mixed with a fluid before being given as a subcutaneous injection. The nurses will inform you about the exact timing of your injection.

Side effects

Headache, irritability, restlessness, fatigue, fluid retention, breast tenderness and pain at the injection site have been reported, but are extremely uncommon.

Storage

Profasi must be stored below 25 C and kept away from light.
