It is used by members of the Bwiti religion to seek information from ancestors and the spirit world. Intoxication is practiced in Bwiti initiation ceremonies, where very large doses are taken that are sometimes fatal. Users report a feeling of levitation; rainbow-like effects seen surrounding objects; altered time-perception; auditory, gustatory, and olfactory synesthesia; and mood swings varying from fear to euphoria.
