Golf in the Highlands
For the golfing enthusiast, Shillong is blessed with a most delightful and challanging course known as "Glen-eagle of the East" in the United States Golf Association Museum.
A group of British Civil Service officers introduced golf to Shillong in 1898 by constructing a nine hole course at an altitude of 5200 ft in 1898, it was converted into a 18 hole course in 1924. It is a traditional Highland golf course, set in an undulating valley and surrounded by majestic pine and rhododendron trees, offering superb views. The clubhouse serves snacks, home baking and refreshments.
The course offers a great variety of shot making for the low handicapper or for the casual visitor. Tight fairways are difficult to negotiate with the number of out-of-bounds streams that criss-cross every fairway only making it more trying. Obstructions come in the form of bunkers and trees. The fairways are carpeted with a unique local grass which hardens the soil. The longest hole is the 6th, a grueling 594 yards.
