The Standardisation of Hindi on computers
The following are simply notes for the outline of my research project. Any information you might have on any of the following topics will be very gratefully received. Contact Richard Woodward - raw@india.com.
1. The Hindi typewriter
When was it invented? How was the keyboard layout
chosen? Was it successful? Who were the typists?
Contact Remmington India.
2. The first Hindi on computers
When and in what form? Was the typewriter system
adopted? How does it compare with the introduction of other languages,
e.g. Japanese, German, Russian, etc.
3. Corporate influences. Microsoft, Apple, and IBM. Software developers and their approaches. Why has Hindi been left behind, or has it?
4. Government influence. Departments responsible for the promotion of Hindi and Technology.
5. Indian languages. Development of systems for universal use with all Indian languages. Problems involved with language compatibility and solutions.
6. Users. Publishers and companies in India. How do they use Hindi on computers? Is there a common system?
7. Users 2. Do computer users in India prefer English? Would new computer users prefer Hindi? Should a system be based on the English keyboard by phonetics? Foreign users of Hindi.
