MALE
Lakshman (LOKSH mun). Young prince, fair, mid 20's fiercely loyal
to Rama, a little hot headed.
Rama (RAH muh). The Crown Prince, black or very dark, loved by all,
truthfulness his main virtue and challenge.
King Dasharatha (dush uh RUT uh) Father to Rama, Lakshmana, Bharat.
Husband to Queens Kaikeyi and Kausalya.
Bharat (B-HA rut). Loyal brother to Rama whose mother attempts to have
him crowned instead of Rama.
Ravana (RA vuh nuh). Ten headed demon, hideous, hated, very powerful who
steals and conquers what the can't have any other way; kidnapper of Rama's wife and
queen-to-be, Sita.
Hanuman (Huh noo MAHN). Magical, playful, brilliant, talking monkey
hero who finds Sita in her captivity.
FEMALE
Manthara (MUN tuh ruh). Hunchbacked servant of Queen Kaikeyi who, out of
fear for her own security, inspires the queen to overthrow the Crown Prince in favor of
Kaikeyi's son, Bharat.
Sita (SEE tuh). Rama's beautiful, strong, faithful wife brought up
to be a queen as much as he has been raised to be a king.
Queen Kausalya (COW sull yuh). The mother of Rama and wife to King
Dasharatha.
Queen Kaikeyi (KIE kay ee). The favorite and youngest wife of
King Dasharatha, who once saved his life in a battle, who demands fulfillment of a promise
the king made to her that day and changes the future of the royal family. Mother of
Bharat.
Shurparnaka (SURE par nuh kuh). Forest dwelling, ugly, lustful
demoness who pursues Rama. Sister of Ravana whose rage at her spurning and wounding
by Rama and Lakshmana prompts his vengeful kidnap of Sita.
Demoness Guard. One who taunts Sita when she is held captive by Ravana.
Doubling up is a possibility. The actor who plays King Dasharatha could also play
the voice of Ravana. The actress who plays Manthara could also play Shurpanaka and
the Demoness Guard.
