Recent Trip Report
When I Fished -------------------------------------
Saturday 17 November 2k1
Where I Fished ------------------------------------
Taylor's Island, Outfitter's Shoals, Fox's Cabin
Click Here for more about this location.
Water ---------------------------------------------
They ran 0 or 1 turbines while I was fishing.
Weather -------------------------------------------
The weather was mostly sunny, beautiful, brisk cold breeze in the morning.
Hatches -------------------------------------------
Saw some brown caddis, lots of small bwo's, and some midges.
Flies Used ----------------------------------------
I fished a big perla nymph at Taylor's Island in the morning, fished my brown hackle peacock after that.
My Catch ----------------------------------------
I caught 11 rainbows 9-11 1/2", 3 at Outfitter's Shoals, 8 at Fox's Cabin.
(YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary)
Things That Made Me Glad I Went -------------------
Something that didn't make me glad was an encounter with a couple of guys in hovercraft, discussed on the message board. In the morning I fished at Taylor's Island on low water with a perla nymph. I caught one 2" shiner, which viciously attacked the size 6 nymph. I had forgotten how fierce and cold the wind is in that gorge early on a wintry morning, but I was reminded. When I went to the bank to try to warm my hands, I found fresh deer tracks in the sand.
(This isn't all about catching fish you know!)

Photo of the Week (or month, or whatever)----------
This is Jason, new fly fisherman, one of his first trips with a flyrod. Caught 5 rainbows, tan wooly booger, powerhouse, September 2k1.

Expected Conditions This Weekend
Updated -------------------------------------------
Friday 23 November about 10:30 pm. I went out of town for Thanksgiving, got back late friday night.
Water ---------------------------------------------
Fantastic! Off or one turbine all weekend! Saturday 1 turbine 6-7 am, 0 7-10, 1 10-11, 0 11 am-2 pm, 1 2-3, 0 3-6, 1 6-7, and so forth. Similar on Sunday, avg 200 cfs each day.
Click Here for a current water release schedule.
Click Here for a schedule for 2 turbine progress down river.
Weather -------------------------------------------
Saturday rain and storms, 52-71, wind SSE 19, 30% chance of rain, mostly pm. Sunday partly cloudy, 53-68, wind W 8.
Click Here for a current weather forecast.
Expected Hatches ----------------------------------
bwo's, caddis, midges.
Click Here for a hatch chart.
My Plans ------------------------------------------
I plan to fish Sunday, somewhere between the powerhouse and Big Bend.
(So much water, so little time!)
Things To Look Forward To -------------------------
TVA is dropping the lake, and should be running a lot for a while. The lake has turned over, the water is getting cooler, and fishing should get better. Browns are fall spawners, and it's about time for them to start moving around.
If you want to try a novelty, Sunday 4 Nov. I went upriver from the powerhouse to see if trout had moved up there. They had. I got a temp of 54, cooler than the discharge. Saw some rising trout, and even managed to catch one. Be cautioned, however, that the bedrock and boulders up there are mostly sandstone and wading is difficult and dangerous. Take care.
Notes ---------------------------------------------
Check the message board for the latest info on flow schedules. Hunting seasons are underway, time to wear something orange.
