Evergrace:
Platform: Playstation 2 Publisher: From Software Developer: From Software Projected Release Date: Now (Japan)
Best known for their King's Field titles and the Armored Core series, From Software has won over a devoting following of gamers. Now with the spiffy, high-powered Playstation 2 and all of its fancy functions, this development house has a new system to sink its teeth into. With Eternal Ring and Armored Core 2 in the works, From also has a little number by the name of Evergrace for the Playstation 2.
Originally being made for the Playstation, From made the leap to the Playstation two with this title, allowing taking advantage of the added power of the next gen system. In Evergrace the player can either play as a man by the name of Yuterald, or a woman known as Shalami. Yuterald is out to avenge his parents murder, but, as luck would have it, he gets transported to the Ryuben Empire. Unfortunately for Shalami, a close friend of Yuterald, she somehow gets sent to this world as well. While the game starts as two separate scenarios for the two adventurers, eventually they meet up, and will be able to work as a team.
Utilizing a stat augmentation system, players will be able to use a substance called Palmira to customize their characters. This material can give the character magic casting abilities, improve physical traits, and offer protection from elements. The use of Palmira in the game will be integral, as there is no level building, necessitating wise use of this valuable substance. Weapons and armor can even be merged with Palmira, making things like ice armor, or a lightning bow.
Although Evergrace is coming to the Playstation 2, the graphics aren't as spellbinding as one may hope from the super system. While they are impressive, they don't have the pizzazz that gamers are expecting from the system. What is surprising however (brace yourselves), is that From has chosen to make this game in the 3rd person. After all of those first person dungeon crawls in the King's Field series they've opted for an over-the-shoulder perspective this time. One nice touch that players will be able to see is that the characters' weapons and armor will visibly change when a new piece is equipped.
While the game isn't looking terribly innovative, with a fairly standard action RPG vibe to it, Evergrace may satisfy those who want some quick straight forward action oriented questing. Although the game has not been announced for a North American release, it wouldn't be surprising if a publisher snapped it up for localization.
