Thurow時代與M.I.T.
過去,M.I.T.
在日本,M.I.T.
I came to Sloan because I wanted to be in the Boston area. I liked the international student body -- I had gone to international schools most of my life, since home for me is where my parents are, but college and my recent work did not contain that exposure. Sloan brought me back to an international world.
The first thing I gained from Sloan was a new skill set. I came with some experience in management, but Sloan gave me a depth of understanding that I could not possibly have reached through two more years at work. The second thing I got from Sloan was an appreciation of the global nature of business. Hearing the perspectives of my non-American colleagues in class, going to international events like the Country Seminars, and getting to know classmates from all over the world were invaluable parts of my education.
I chose Sloan because of its education system. At MIT you are not taught what to think, but rather how to think. The Sloan system combines practical training through independent consulting projects and case studies, with the theoretical and analytical tools you need to tackle today's and tomorrow's complex problems.
People who don't have a technical background shouldn't be put off by Sloan. It's challenging but, it gives you more credibility when you go back into the business world, and it's a very supportive place. You really will get through with a little help from your friends. I learned a huge amount from Sam, an engineer and a great friend in my class. There's too much made of the engineer/non-engineer divide in the world. When I leave Sloan, I intend to go to Japan for a year. I'd like to be involved in international project work, building power stations for example. I see Sloan as just the start of my connection to MIT.
I came to Sloan because I thought that my technical background would fit well with the MIT environment. What I found was an incredible melting pot, a place of immense diversity. Inter- personal skills are critical -- being able to work effectively in teams with a wide variety of people. In my first year I joined the Volunteer Consulting Group and managed a project for the Huntington's Disease Society of American, and now I'm on their board of directors. My second year I was president of VCG. My job was to recruit students and clients and make a match between the two. It was a great chance to add value while in school, and it really helped my selling skills!
