Munich, Germany

After breakfast in the hotel (where I taught Aaron how to eat a soft-boiled egg--cultural experiences abound!), we walked down to the train station.

There are no personnel at the ticket booth on weekends, and the ticketing machines are so complicated I had other Germans later in the week asking me to help them figure out what ticket to buy, but today we were as confused as anyone else, and had to ask for help. Even so, I forgot to validate my ticket (see where it says "hier entwerten" at the top?), so it's a good thing I didn't get checked--the German trains are on an honor system, and you only get checked randomly.

The train ride turned out to be 40 minutes--about twice what I was expecting.

We followed the walking tour in the guidebook, from the train station
up to Karlsplatz, where we dabbled our feet in the fountain.
It was a hot, hot day! This little boy had the right idea!

Also in this square I found the bookstore with the utterly irresistable name of "Hugenduble," recommended to me by the inestimable Claudia Muir for its English language section.

This is the Karlstor, one of the medieval city gates. It's on the other side of that fountain.

These musicians were inside the gate.

This is a department store with some unusual weathervanes on the roof peaks.

I'm not sure what the message here is...
