Our Gettysburg Trip

A couple of weeks ago, my wife, Sue and I took some time off and made a trip to Gettysburg. This was the fullfilment of a very old dream. We had planned this trip a number of times and each time something came up and we had to cancel the trip. Early in October 1999, we finally got to live this dream. We spent three days in the Gettysburg area and visited most of the battlefield, along with other sights in the town and surrounding area. One such side trip was to Emmitsburg, Md., across the border and about ten minutes drive from Gettysburg. There is a beautiful and tranquil shrine located here dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. This site is the Grotto of Lourdes, the oldest such site outside of France. The spring waters at the Grotto are said to have religious healing powers...if you are so inclined to believe. The Grotto's location is on the surrounding hillside and is one of the most peaceful and beautiful experiences in the area. Such is this serene sanctuary ironically located just south of the greatest battlefild of the American Civil War... Gettysburg.

We spent many hours touring the battlefield and taking in the history of this hollowed ground. My direct ancestor's, Paul Hebert, Pvt., Co. A., 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry and Placide Richard, Pvt., Co. K., 18th Louisiana Infantry can lay no claim to taking part in this greatest of American civil war battles; but, there were many others bearing our proud Cajun family names from St. Landry Parish: Richard, Hebert, Guillory, Roy, LeJeune, Fuselier, Manuel and David who did take part in this epic struggle with the Louisiana regiments and batteries who accompanied Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia to the little town of Gettysburg. The rest, of course, is history.

The following photos are some of the many from our trip to Gettysburg and offer an overall view of some of what we experienced during those three wonderful days and nights. We also toured the battlefield on the last night before leaving Gettysburg. Anyone who goes to Gettysburg really should do this. The experience is exhilarating!

I know that there are many sites across the web that offer "bigger and better" tours of the Battlefield of Gettysburg; but, I wanted to add my little bit of a trip to this site and for anyone interested...a little view from my perspective.

Enjoy the images!

Gettysburg, July 3, 1863..."Emmitsburg Road" by Don Troiani "...Coming up to the first fence the Tennesseans and Alabamians (Archer's Brigade) beat at it (fence) with their musket-butts, but some unknown and unknowing Pennsylvania farmer had built it too stoutly to be thus knocked down. There was nothing to do but to go over the top; as they did, they offered a fine mark to the Pennsylvanians firing from just north of the Angle. Men toppled from the planks..."
