Additional Information (15 August 2002): Romain Berthelot was married to Leocadie LIBEAU (b. 1850). Their marriage took place on 2 April 1866 in St. James Parish. Witnesses for the ceremony were men who had served with Romain in the 18th Louisiana and included the following names: Philogene Bourgois, Co. A., A. (Andre or Alceste) Montz, Co. E., Elphege Poche, Co. A., and Simon Pollet, Co. A. After the war, it is known that by trade, Romain was a butcher. Additionally, the other Great-great-grandfather to the contributor, Moise Deslattes (1833-1900) was a member of Faries's Pelican Light Artillery -- which was attached to the 18th Louisiana. Moise was captured on 14 April 1863 at the Battle of Irish Bend and was also involved in the federal gunboat Diana incident (Capture of Federal gunboat Diana occured on 28 March 1863 when elements of the 28th Louisiana [Gray's] helped capture the Diana in a skirmish on the Atchafalaya River). At the time of this writing, we do not know the date of Romain's death, nor the location of his final resting place. A check of the Confederate Pension Applications listed at the Archives in Baton Rouge indicate no application on file for neither Romain nor his wife/widow Leocadie. Information kindly provided by Mr. Horace Beach.
