Civilian Data: (23 August 2000) Benjamin Saxon Story was born in New
Orleans in 1834, son of Benjamin and Ann Eliza (Clement) Story. He
was the only surviving child of 14 children born to the Benjamin and
Ann Eliza. He survived the war and after the war in May of 1867, he
married Miss Jeannie Campbell, the daughter of Mrs. Jane Wray
Washington Campbell. Benjamin Saxon Story passed away in New Orleans
in 1901 and is laid to rest in the Metairie Cemetery, Metaire
Louisiana, which is a suburb of New Orleans. There apparently is no
application for Confederate pension benefits on file for Benjamin
Saxon and or his wife/widow on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge.

Additional Information (3 September 2001): William R. Burke was born
on February 14, 1839. His parents were William Burke and Ellen LEE
who were both natives of Waterford, Ireland. William R. Burke began
business as a liveryman and also gave some attention to the
carpenter's trade. William did survive the war. William married Miss
Elise BONIN on October 28, 1867. It is not stated as to how many
children this marriage produced. William became involved in the
running of the public schools system in Iberia Parish and eventually
became superintendent of the public schools of Iberia Parish. We, at
this time are uncertain as to the location and time of death of
William R. Burke, nor do we have a location of his burial site. A
check of the records does not show an application for Confederate
Pension benefits on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge for William
nor for a widow named Ellen LEE.

The following family legend was related over Christmas 2000, by the
Great-grandnephew to Sosthene Sevigne, Jesse Breaux of Eunice,
Lousiana and is as follows:
Related by my father who was 94 years old at the time. Sosthene was with his regiment near Lake Dauterive in Loreauville, La. and someone shouted the yankees are coming. All the soldiers went into the woods and Sosthene found an old plank of wood, which he place in a tree. He slept on this plank that night and the next day, high water was everywhere and he had laryngitis, the soldiers were in small boats looking for Sosthene. They found him perched on the plank in a tree. They took him home and fed him broth and he gained strength and was sent to Kentucky [unsure if Kentucky correct location? According to Confederate Pension Application Records #233, Allowed on June 16, 1914, filed with the State of Louisiana, Sosthene was wounded, and lost the sight in the right eye at the Battle of Mansfield. jlr], where they were in combat.
He had been wounded and was behind a large tree stump. A fellow soldier came by and told him to move and he told the soldier he was wounded. The soldier pulled his sword out and was about to cut his head off and an enemy bullet struck the soldier dead.
This story was told to me by my father. Sosthene was an uncle to
Dad.

Civilian Data: (12 December 2001) Jules S. Broussard was born in
1840. He was married to Miss Emelie CORMIER. It is not stated as to
the number of children born of this union. However, one of their
children, Adelbert Broussard was the Great grandfather of the
contributor, Mr. Bill Diaz. One of Adelbert's daughters was Odillia
Mary BROUSSARD who was the Grandmother to Mr. Bill Diaz. As it turns
out Leo Pierre Champagne and Jules S. Broussard -- both of Bill's
Great great Grandfathers served in the same Company in the 18th
Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Leo Pierre's Grandson Dudley Pierre
Champagne, married Jules S. Broussard's Grand daughter, Odillia Mary
Broussard. They had 3 children from this marriage, one of which is
Bill's Mother -- Nancy M. Champagne. A real twist of fate. Jules S.
passed away in 1916 and is laid to rest at the St. Bernard Catholic
Church Cemetery [N. Main St and St. Bernard Drive] in Breaux Bridge,
Louisiana. According to the records located at the Archives in Baton
Rouge, there is an application for Confederate Pension benefits filed
on behalf of both Jules S. and his widow Emelie CORMIER Broussard.
Many thanks are extended to Mr. Bill Diaz on behalf of the 18th
Louisiana Infantry Regiment for his excellent contribution to the
history of this Louisiana historical military unit.

Great great grandson, Bill Diaz is on display in our photo album. It
is believed that the photograph was taken sometimes between 1880 and
1890. It is of our understanding that the Champagne family also
possesses a photograph of Leo Pierre taken in his uniform during the
Civil War. Should you care to view the image of Leo Pierre Champagne,

his most gracious contribution to the history of the 18th Louisiana

Civilian Data: (23 August 2001) Daniel A. James was born probably at
sea en route to Texas (information from the 1880 and 1890 Census). At
this time his parents are unknown. Daniel married Sarah FLYNN --
marriage date is unspecified. This marriage produced at least two
children: Mary Agnes, born October 1857 in Louisiana. Mary Agnes
married John Edward Flattery on 25 May 1874 and this marriage
produced three children: William Maurice Flattery, Florence Flattery
and John Thomas Flattery. Daniel and Sarah's other child was John A.
James, born about 1870. At this time we do not know the time and
circumstances of Daniel's death, nor do we know the location of his
burial site. A check of the Applications for Pension Benefits in
Louisiana and Texas reveals no application on file for either Daniel
or his wife/widow Sarah FLYNN.

Additional Data: (30 October 2001) Benjamin Appolinaire Kidder was
married to Marie Aurore BERGERON. Family lore, as presented by
Benjamin Appolinaire's descendant, Marie Kidder, indicates that he
had married three times "in the same shoes". It is not known if the
first two marriages ended in death of the wife or by divorce. There
is an application for Confederate Widow's Pension Benefits on file at
the Archives in Baton Rouge in the name of Azema LAGRANDE who's
husband was listed as Benjamin Kidder; but, we do not know if this is
possibly his third wife/widow. It is also known that Benjamin served
at some point in the war in Co. E., 7th Louisiana Cavalry. This
record (July - August 1865) indicates that he was paroled at New
Iberia, La., with his residence being listed as being in St. Martin
Parish. We do know that Benjamin survived the war and passed away in
1884. His final resting place is St. Francis Regis Catholic Church
Cemetery in Arnaudville, Louisiana.

Civilian Data: Alcide LeBlanc was born on Sept. 16, 1840,and was
married to Eliza Bernard. They raised a family (number of children
are unstated). His civilian occupation was : Landowner. He did
survive the war. Alcide passed away on June 5, 1919 and his burial
site is at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Abbeville,
Louisiana. Additional comments: His tomb in Abbeville has a C.S.A.
headstone, listing the La. 18th as his outfit. A check of the Pension
Application Records at the Archives in Baton Rouge lists an
application on behalf of Eliza Bernard LeBlanc. We have seen a story
about the 18th as follows: when the commanding general first saw the
Cajun troops, he questioned his officers about the Cajuns' dirty
uniforms, funny music, and odd foods. After a few battles, where they
kicked some Yankee butt, the general told his officers to let the
Cajuns have their food and music - just be sure they were in the
front line for the next battle. Great story!
