Rhody, William H., Pvt. Co. I, 18th La. Inf. En. Jan. 2, 1862, Powder House, La. Present on Roll to June, 1862. Roll July and Aug., 1862 (last Roll on which borne), Discharged expiration of term, under age, July 24, 1862.
Civilian Data: (17 August 2000) William H. Rhody according to family lore had green eyes and bore a scar on his chin -- likely due to a bullet grazing him. William was discharged from the service [C. S. A.] due to his being underage. William survived the war and eventually left the States for Mexico and then moving on to British Honduras (currently Belize) where he married a Mayan Indian woman. It is not stated as to when William died, nor the location of his burial site.
Additional Information (15 March 2003): I found some more pieces of the puzzle on my Great Great Grandfather Rhody, in of all places a travel guide on Belize. They had a wonderful section [about] the history of the country including a [of good] pages on the confederates that moved down there. It seems for a while there, two ships were leaving New Orleans monthly to go down there with settlers. It is estimated about 1,500 ex-confederates came to British Honduras (Belize) after the war. Twice monthly steamship service from New Orleans started in 1866 and by 1867 to 1869 the Trade Winds and the General Sherman were taking about 100 settlers per trip to British Honduras. The British were leading folks to believe they would turn over the reigns of government. The group that my GG-Grandfather was with settled near Orange Walk Town -- my mother's home town. They were lead by a certain Captain Beauregard, brother to the famed general who worked with Colonel Benjamin, brother to the Confederate secretary of war. To this day there is an area south of town called Louisiana farm. This group of ex-Louisiana soldiers was noted to have helped put down an indian rebellion led by Marcus Canul. The battle near Orange Walk town occurred in 1872 and the rebel leader Marcus Canul was shot from his saddle and later died, taking the wind out of the indian rebellion. This helps fill in some gaps in the family history. We knew he had been involved in a fight with the indians, but no other details. This was an unexpected surprise for me and I immediately bought another copy of the book to give my relatives in Belize. These little tidbits of history are not being taught in the schools there and it was fun to mesh what we already knew with what the book supplied. The information above was supplied by the Great great grandson to William Rhody, Saun Riedell.
