Deaf School was a Pre-New Wave Modern Pop big band with 9 members formed by art school graduates in Liverpool. Later the members played in Big In Japan, Clive Langer & The Boxes, the Planets, the Original Mirrors and as Bette Bright (solo). In '88, they reunited with most of the original members for a live tour. Clive Langer succeeded as a producer of Madness , Dexy's Midnight Runners, etc. with his partner Alan Winstanley.
Clive Langer ("Cliff Langer" --geddit?) is the most famous person among ex. Deaf School members. The late Ian Dury was his teacher in his art school. After disbanding, he formed Clive Langer And The Boxes. Most of the members came within his ex. band mates. "Splash" was released on Warner Pioneer in Japan. Later, he got fame as a producer. Key ones are Madness deeply associated with him, Elvis Costello, Hue Cornwell of the Stranglers, Tim Finn, Morrisey, China Crisis, Schnell Fenster (ex. Split Enz), and many more others.
Steve Allen ("Enrico Cadillac, Jr.") formed The Original Mirrors with Ian Broudie and others after disbanding. Then, he acted as a Disco singer in Italy in '83 - '84, and as a solo in Germany in '85. In the same year, he moved to the U. K. and played as a keyboardist in Elvis Costello And The Attractions, formed The Perils Of Plastic with Steve Naive releasing two singles. Later, he acted back as a solo and released a single in '87.
Anne Martin ("Bette Bright") released 5 singles as Bette Bright & The Illuminations (a session band consisting ex.Deaf School members such as Clive Langer) after disbanding. Then, she had a tour as the Illuminations with Rusty Egan (ex. Visage), Glen Mattrock (ex. Sex Pistols/Rich Kids). After releasing a solo album, she appeared on the movie for Sex Pistols (Great Rock'n' Roll Swindle" and did modeling in London, but she retired after marrying with Graham Suggs McPherson of Madness.
Steve Lindsey ("Frank Average")released singles during Deaf School days, then formed the Planets after Big In Japan and Secrets (no albums released). It seems that the Planets' name was used as a Lindsey's solo project and it was not exactly a band. "Spot" was released on Victor in Japan. It was co-produced by Nigel Grey who worked on Police. As a result, it has many very Policesque Reggae tracks. After that, Lindsey was active as a producer and produced (also performed) tons of albums including Billy Joel, Elton John, Neil Sedaka. (Not to be confused with Steve Lindsay of The Big Dish)
Tim Whittaker wondered around many bands after disbanding. From Pink Military, Lori & The Chameleons, and formed his own band Tim Whittaker's Gailforce. In '86, he formed Sex Gods. This band is a percussion unit with Pete de Fratus, a ex. drummer of Echo & The Bunnymen. After Fratus left, the remaining debuted as Balcony Dogs on Island.
Ian Richie was active as a producer and a performer after disbanding. As a known work, he was a center person of the Bleeding Heart Band by Roger Walters of Pink Floyd. As a producer, he worked on Hugh Cornwell's "Wolf" (co-produced by Clive), Pete Wary, Big Dish, etc.
