The Story of Wyn:Born and raised at Benden Weyr, Miralwyn was the product of a failed mating flight, but a successful pairing of brownrider M'ral and Eidwyn, one of the women of the lower caverns. Her mother bore her and nursed her, but turned her over to the nannies at the age of six months, whereupon she spent her growing-up turns as that most feared thing, a Weyrbrat. M'ral, and Bneth too, kept a loose eye on his daughter's progress, and was always there to be turned to if she needed him, but weyr families are rarely tight knit, and he also had to spread his attention over his other children. Near twenty, at last count. Still, Miralwyn is rather fond of her father, and he returns the feelings, if a little absently at time. The brownrider saw to it that Miralwyn was present at the weyrharper's lessons, as he wanted his children to amount to something in the world, even if they arose by accident. So Mira learned her letters and figures and ballads, and developed a small talent for sketching. And by the age of fourteen was working as an assistant in the Benden Infirmary. Her main duties included emptying bedpans and scrubbing floors, but she also began to learn bits and pieces of Healer lore while she was at it. Age fifteen wasn't a terribly great turn for Miralwyn, however, for it was then that she had her first introduction to the heartbreaks that love and romance can be. The weyrleader's son, a bronzerider of about 25, had just become temporarily estranged from his weyrmate, and was on the prowl. The young Wyn, who'd had a typical young girl's crush on the handsome young man, was fairly easy game for a bit of sexual revenge on a weyrmate who'd strayed. But Miralwyn at fifteen wasn't the cold and controlled Miralwyn who showed up at Healer Hall's door. Unwisely, she saw love where none was, and was left with a broken heart. Her older brother Morallen saw to it that the bronzerider was left with a broken nose however, which necessitated his departure to the Fort Healer Hall. And Wyn, with her closest relative gone, was left to muddle things out on her own. So she proceeded to sleep with anything human that offered, male or female, get drunk on a regular basis, and severely irritate the rest of the Infirmary staff in the rest of her time for the next half turn. M'ral and Eidwyn, a trifle absent minded in matters of parenting, and not given much information by Miralwyn to begin with, chalked it up to the pains of growing up. Wyn survived however, and emerged cool, confident and with her famous facade firmly in place. The trusting innocence was gone, buried deep inside and replaced with an appalling rationalism. At the age of seventeen, she decided that she'd apprentice herself to the Healer Craft, and would brook no opposition to her plans. Miralwyn may be quiet in voice and petite in body, but when she knows what she wants... It's just better to go along with her. So M'ral and Bneth carried the young woman to Ista, and then left her to seek an interview. Surviving a round with the Journeyman Eric, she settled herself in the dorms with a new knot, and settled into her new home shortly afterwards. She was a fairly typical apprentice, although she had an aura of meekness and good behaviour that followed her: always on time for class, and actually even studied. However, she wasn't always as law-abiding as she seemed. No, in fact she bended or broke quite a number of the Apprentice Rules. Including a short but memorable fling with another apprentice, Alain. Still, she somehow managed to avoid getting called on the carpet. Taking Mindhealing as a specialty, and Senior Journeyman Jathen for a mentor, she seemed all set for an uninterrupted progression through the ranks and classes and skill sets of Healing. And then one day, Miralwyn got Searched. By the High Reaches greens Vespurath and Branwyth, on a day at the beach that turned out much more eventful than she'd thought. Candidacy was a whirl of chores, pranks, llamas, friendships, and much much mending, and then on Hatching Day, a certain blue dragonet named Vorkoroth decided to share his secrets with the self contained young woman. Now a dragonrider like her father before her, Wyn's plans are changed, but she and Vorkoroth have adapted, adjusted and grown with an aplomb common to both. |
