Sony Music Nashville Signs
Pam Tillis
First Release
Tribute Album to the Songs of Mel Tillis
NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 21, 2002 /PRNewswire/ -- Allen Butler, President/CEO
of Sony Music Nashville, has announced the signing of
singer/songwriter/entertainer Pam Tillis. Her first project will be a
special tribute album to the songs of her father Mel Tillis, set for a July
30 release on Columbia/Lucky Dog Records.
A multi-talented artist with a mantle of awards, a string of #1 hits and
sales topping five million units, Pam is excited about the prospects about
working with her long-time friend Butler whom she credits with much of her
early success at Artista Records.
"Pam and I go back to the opening of Arista's Nashville office. She's an
amazing talent and a great ambassador for our format," said Butler.
Regarding Pam's first Columbia/Lucky Dog album, Butler relates, "Mel Tillis
has directly or indirectly influenced much of country music and our artists
of today. Who better than his own daughter -- who's a great vocalist and
songwriter with a totally identifiable sound -- to pay tribute to small
portion of his amazing career?"
Tillis has been contemplating the idea of a tribute to her father's songs
for quite some time. "A lot of people don't realize what an incredible
career my dad has had and how many #1 hit songs he wrote, recorded, and won
awards for. These aren't just songs I love; these are my earliest musical
memories," said Pam. "Quite literally, these were the songs that rocked my
cradle -- especially since my mom couldn't carry a tune!"
Eight of the cuts on the album were produced by Pam, and Asleep at the Wheel
frontman Ray Benson handled production duties on the remaining four. "I
wanted to venture outside Nashville to work with Ray," she said. "There's
great tradition in these songs, and I felt Ray would respect the integrity
of the style of those songs."
Pam Tillis has been a formidable force in country music since her first
Arista single hit the charts in 1990. She has racked up 14 Top Five hits
including six that hit #1, and every one of her albums has been certified
gold or platinum. A first-rate songwriter in her own right, Pam has had her
compositions recorded by artists as varied as Chaka Khan, Juice Newton and
Conway Twitty. She was one of the first women in Nashville to produce her
own album, and she was awarded the coveted "Female Vocalist of the Year" by
the CMA in 1994. Her collection also includes two other CMA awards and a
Grammy Award. She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2000 and can
currently be seen in a high-profile ad campaign for Easy Spirit's "Spirit of
Country" in Vogue, In Style and Redbook.

RECORDS SELLING ... AGAIN
Some of the very early recordings by the late
Waylon Jennings
are among the hottest selling in the country. A re-issue of some of his
early work, "Phase One: The Early Years," was just pressed by Hip-O Records
and is selling as fast as it hits the shelves. The news provider
www.country.com says it in-
cludes 20 of Jennings' songs, including his one recording for A&M Records,
"Sing the Girls a Song, Bill." Unfortunate- ly for Jennings and A&M, it was
a flop. Also on the retro- spective CD are two songs that Jennings did that
were orig- inally Buddy Holly hits, "It's So Easy" and "Rave On."
