Dolly Parton STORY
BEHIND THE SONG
A lot of country
music hit songs have come from strange circumstances. Dolly Parton's
1978 hit, "Two
Doors Down" was
just such a song! Dolly says,
"I wrote "Two Doors Down"
because I was on a diet."
According to Dolly, "I
didn't get heavy until I started making enough money to get fat. And so I
did. I was eating everything I wanted and
plenty of it! By 1977 I had tried all those crazy diets and at the time I
was on a liquid protein diet. I had been on the diet for about a month. The
diet was working--I was losing weight but I was starving myself to death!"
"I was on the road and in my motel room. The band had gone out to eat but I
didn't go because I was trying to stay on the diet. So I stayed in the motel
room, drinking my liquid protein and feeling sorry for myself. And to get my
mind off of eating--I decided to write some songs." "The band was just
two doors down--eating and having a party. So that's where "Two Doors Down"
came from." Dolly
added, "I ordered
some black coffee to help keep me awake so I could keep on writing and I
also wrote "It's
All Wrong But It's All Right"
that same night.
The two songs were issued as a back to back single and entered the country
music charts March 18th, 1978 and became a two sided number one hit.
"Two Doors Down" also scored a # 19 hit on the pop music charts.
